VI . The Home Under the Ground The next day Peter measured Wendy , John and Michael for their trees . Each tree had to fit you exactly . You took a deep breath at the top and slid down at just the right speed . Wendy soon loved the home under the ground . It was one big room . Mushrooms grew in the floor , and they used them as stools . A Never tree grew in the middle of the room . Every morning the boys cut it down to the floor , and by tea - time it was high enough to use as a table . There was one enormous bed , and all the boys slept in it , packed like sardines in a tin . When one boy gave the signal , they all turned over together . Only Michael slept in a basket , because Wendy wanted a baby . In the wall there was a tiny room no bigger than a bird cage . That was Tinker Bell’s bedroom , and she kept her little curtain closed . Wendy was always busy cooking and mending socks . Some meals were real , and some were only make - believe . It depended on Peter . Wendy’s pet wolf from her dreams at home found her on the island , and after that it followed her everywhere . Did Wendy think about her parents ? Not very much . She was sure that her mother would always keep the window open . But John remembered his parents only a little , and Michael believed that Wendy was really his mother . So Wendy gave them tests about their old life . “ What colour were Mother’s eyes ? Who was taller , Father or Mother ? ” Even John got many answers wrong . And all the questions were in the past tense . Wendy was forgetting too . There were adventures every day . Once Peter drew a circle on the ground and dared the lions to cross it , and no lion came . Once Tink tried to send Wendy home on a floating leaf while she was asleep . And the pirates left their cake in one place after another , but Wendy always took it away . At last it became as hard as a stone , and Hook fell over it in the dark . But the best adventure of all was at the Mermaids ’ Lagoon . VII . The Mermaids ’ Lagoon The children spent many summer days at the lagoon . The mermaids sat on Marooners ’ Rock and combed their long hair . They were friendly only to Peter . When Wendy came near , they dived away and splashed her with their tails . The rock had that name because bad sea captains sometimes left sailors there . When the tide came in , the rock went under the water .
