The fight was short and sharp . Swords flashed in the water . John fought Starkey in the boat until they both fell into the lagoon . The boys kept away from Hook’s iron claw . Only Peter was not afraid . Hook climbed onto the rock to breathe , and at the same moment Peter climbed up on the other side . Peter took a knife from Hook’s belt . But then he saw that he was higher on the rock than Hook . That would not be a fair fight . So Peter gave Hook his hand to help him up . And Hook struck him with his claw . It was not the pain that hurt Peter . It was the unfairness . Every child feels this the first time someone is unfair to him , and he never quite gets over it . Peter always forgot it , so every time was like the first time . He could only stare . Twice the iron claw struck him . A few moments later the boys saw Hook swimming wildly away , with the crocodile behind him . They could not find Peter and Wendy , so they went home in the pirates ’ boat . They were sure that Peter and Wendy would swim or fly home too . But Peter and Wendy were lying on the rock , very weak , and the water was rising . “ Soon the water will cover the rock , ” said Peter . “ Hook hurt me . I can’t fly or swim , and you are too tired . ” Then something touched Peter as lightly as a kiss . It was the tail of Michael’s old kite , which had flown away some days before . “ It lifted Michael off the ground , ” said Peter . “ It can carry you ! ” “ Both of us ! ” “ It can’t lift two , ” said Peter . He tied the tail round Wendy . She held on to him , but he said , “ Goodbye , Wendy , ” and pushed her off the rock . In a few minutes the kite carried her out of sight . Peter was alone . The moon came up , and the mermaids began to sing to it . For a moment Peter felt afraid . Then he stood up straight with a smile on his face . A drum was beating inside him , and it seemed to say , “ To die will be an awfully big adventure . ” VIII . The Never Bird The water was already at Peter’s feet when he saw something on the lagoon . It was the Never bird on her nest . She had come to save him with her nest , though her eggs were in it . She called out to him , but Peter did not understand bird language . “ What are you quacking about ? ” he called . The bird lost her temper , and they both shouted “ Shut up ! ” at the same time . But she still pushed the nest against the rock and flew up above it . At last Peter understood . Starkey’s big hat was hanging on an old pole on the rock . Peter put the eggs into the hat and set it on the water . It floated beautifully . The bird flew down onto it and sat on her eggs . Peter got into the nest , used the pole as a mast and hung up his shirt for a sail . Then they floated away in different directions , both cheering . Since that day , all Never birds build their nests in the shape of a hat . Peter got home at almost the same time as Wendy . The boys were several hours late for bed , and that was the biggest adventure of all . The next day Wendy gave out bandages to everyone , and they played at being hurt until bedtime .
