IX . Wendy’s Story After the lagoon , Tiger Lily and her people became Peter’s friends . At night the warriors sat above the home under the ground to guard it , because everyone knew that the pirates would attack soon . The warriors bowed low before Peter , and he liked this very much . Then came an evening that the children later called the Night of Nights . Down in the home under the ground , the children were having a make - believe supper , and they were very noisy . Tootles asked if he could be father . Then he asked if he could be the baby , and then a twin . Everyone said no . “ I didn’t really hope , ” said Tootles . Peter came home with nuts for the boys and the right time for Wendy . He had got it from the crocodile’s clock . After supper they danced in their nightgowns until the dance became a pillow fight . By the fire , Peter looked worried . “ Wendy , ” he said , “ it is only make - believe that I am their father , isn’t it ? It would make me seem so old to be their real father . ” “ But what are your feelings for me , Peter ? ” “ Those of a loving son , Wendy . ” “ I thought so , ” said Wendy , and she went and sat alone at the far end of the room . Then everyone got into bed for Wendy’s story . It was the story the boys loved best and the story Peter hated . “ There were once three children , ” Wendy began , “ who flew away to the Neverland . Think of their poor parents and the empty beds ! But the children knew that their mother would always keep the window open for them . So they stayed away for years . And one day they flew home , and the window was still open ! ” Peter gave a deep groan . “ Wendy , you are wrong about mothers . Long ago I thought my mother would always keep the window open for me . So I stayed away for moons and moons . But when I flew back , the window was locked . My mother had forgotten me , and there was another little boy in my bed . ” The children were frightened . “ Wendy , let’s go home ! ” cried John and Michael . “ Yes , at once , ” said Wendy . “ If you wish it , ” said Peter coldly . He cared very much , but he did not show it . He went up his tree to give orders to the warriors . The lost boys did not want to lose Wendy . “ Let’s keep her prisoner ! ” they cried . But Tootles , the humblest of them all , stood up tall . “ The first one who is rude to Wendy will fight me ! ” he said .
