I . The Cyclone Dorothy lived in the middle of the great flat grasslands of Kansas . She had no parents , so she lived on a farm with Uncle Henry and Aunt Em . Under the floor of their small house there was a dark hole , the cyclone cellar . A cyclone is a terrible wind that turns round and round and can break any house . Everything on the farm was grey : the land , the grass and the house . Aunt Em never smiled , and Uncle Henry never laughed . Only Toto made Dorothy laugh . He was a little black dog with long soft hair , and Dorothy loved him very much . One day the sky was even greyer than usual , and a strong wind began to blow . Suddenly Uncle Henry stood up . “ There’s a cyclone coming , Em ! ” he called . “ I’ll go and look after the animals . ” “ Quick , Dorothy ! ” screamed Aunt Em . “ Run for the cellar ! ” She opened the little door in the floor and climbed down into the hole . But Toto jumped out of Dorothy’s arms and hid under the bed . Dorothy was still trying to catch him when the wind gave a great scream . The house shook so hard that she fell to the floor . Then the house turned round two or three times and rose slowly into the air . The wind carried it higher and higher , like a feather . It was dark , and the wind was howling , but Dorothy was not hurt . Hours passed . Dorothy caught Toto at last , lay down on her bed with him and fell asleep . She woke with a sudden bump . The house was not moving any more . Dorothy ran to the door and cried out in surprise . The house was standing in a beautiful country . There was green grass everywhere , with fruit trees , bright flowers and singing birds . Four strange little people were walking towards her : three men dressed in blue and an old woman in white . They all wore tall pointed hats with little bells round the edge . The old woman bowed low . “ Welcome to the land of the Munchkins , noble witch , ” she said . “ Thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East . Now our people are free . ” “ You are very kind , ” said Dorothy , “ but there must be some mistake . I have never killed anything . ” “ Your house did , ” laughed the old woman . “ Look ! ” Two feet were sticking out from under the corner of the house . They wore silver shoes with pointed toes . “ Oh , dear ! ” cried Dorothy . “ The house fell on her ! What shall we do ? ” “ Nothing , ” said the old woman calmly . “ For many years that Witch made the Munchkins work for her like slaves . Now they are free . I am their friend , the Witch of the North . ” “ Are you a real witch ? ” asked Dorothy . “ Yes , but a good one . The witches of the North and the South are good . The witches of the East and the West were wicked . Now only the Wicked Witch of the West is left . But the greatest of us all is Oz , the Great Wizard . He lives in the Emerald City . ”
