“ Give me back my shoe ! ” cried Dorothy . “ I will not , ” said the Witch . “ It is my shoe now . And one day I will get the other one too . ” Dorothy was so angry that she picked up a bucket of water and threw it over the Witch . At once the Witch gave a loud cry of fear . She began to get smaller and smaller . “ See what you have done ! ” she screamed . “ In a minute I will melt away ! ” “ I’m very sorry , ” said Dorothy . She was really frightened , because the Witch was melting like sugar in the rain . “ Didn’t you know that water would be the end of me ? ” “ Of course not . How could I know ? ” “ I never thought that a little girl like you could end my wicked life . Look out , here I go ! ” And the Witch fell down in a brown , shapeless heap on the floor . Dorothy took her silver shoe from it , cleaned it and put it on again . Then she ran out to tell the Lion that they were free . X . The Golden Cap Dorothy opened the Lion’s gate and told the yellow Winkies that they were free . They were so happy that they danced for days . “ Can’t we save our other friends ? ” asked Dorothy . The Winkies were glad to help . They carried the Tin Woodman back from the rocks , and their best tinsmiths worked on him for three days and four nights . At last he was as good as new , with only a few patches . He cried tears of joy , and Dorothy quickly wiped them away . Then he chopped down the tall tree with the Scarecrow’s clothes in it , and they filled the clothes with clean straw . There was the Scarecrow again , as good as ever . After a few happy days Dorothy thought of Aunt Em . “ We must go back to Oz , ” she said , “ and ask him to keep his promise . ” The Winkies loved the Tin Woodman so much that they asked him to stay and rule over them . But he went with his friends . Before they left , Dorothy found the Golden Cap in the Witch’s cupboard . It was pretty , so she put it on . She knew nothing about its magic . There was no road back to the Emerald City . They walked through fields of yellow flowers for days , but they were lost . “ Let’s call the field mice , ” said Dorothy . “ They can tell us the way . ” So she called , and soon the Queen of the Mice came running . “ You have been walking away from the city all this time , ” said the Queen . Then she saw the Golden Cap . “ Why don’t you call the Winged Monkeys ? The magic words are inside the Cap . But we must run away now , because the Monkeys love to play tricks on us . ”
