Dorothy read the words inside the Cap and stood on her left foot . “ Ep - pe , pep - pe , kak - ke ! ” she said . “ What did you say ? ” asked the Scarecrow . “ Hil - lo , hol - lo , hel - lo ! ” said Dorothy , standing on her right foot . “ Hello ! ” answered the Tin Woodman politely . “ Ziz - zy , zuz - zy , zik ! ” said Dorothy , standing on both feet . At once the Winged Monkeys flew down . “ What do you want ? ” asked their King . “ Please carry us to the Emerald City . ” The Monkeys took the friends in their arms and flew away with them . On the way , Dorothy asked the King why they had to obey the Cap . “ Long ago we were free , and we loved to play tricks , ” said the King . “ One day my grandfather dropped a young man into a river for a joke . The young man was going to marry a good and powerful princess , and she was very angry . So she ordered that the Monkeys must obey the owner of the Golden Cap three times . Now the Cap is yours , and you can call us two more times . ” Soon the Monkeys put the travellers down at the gate of the Emerald City and flew away . “ How lucky that you took the Cap ! ” said the Lion . XI . Behind the Screen The Guardian of the Gates was very surprised to see them . “ But you went to the Wicked Witch ! ” he said . “ Yes , and she is melted , ” said the Scarecrow . “ Dorothy melted her . ” The man bowed very low to Dorothy . The friends went back to the Palace and waited , but Oz did not call them for days . At last the Scarecrow sent him a message . If Oz did not see them at once , they would call the Winged Monkeys . Oz did not want to meet the Monkeys again , so he called the friends the next morning . When they went into the Throne Room , they saw nobody at all . But a voice seemed to come from the top of the room . “ I am Oz , the Great and Terrible . Why have you come to me ? ” “ We have come for what you promised , ” said Dorothy . “ The Wicked Witch is dead . ” “ Dear me , ” said the Voice , and it seemed to shake a little . “ How sudden ! Well , come back tomorrow . I must have time to think . ” The Lion decided to frighten the Wizard , so he gave a great roar . Toto jumped away in fear and knocked over a screen in the corner . Behind the screen stood a little old man with no hair and a face full of lines . He looked as surprised as they were . The Tin Woodman lifted his axe . “ Who are you ? ” he cried . “ I am Oz , the Great and Terrible , ” said the little man in a shaking voice . “ But please don’t hit me ! I’ll do anything you want . ” “ I thought Oz was a great Head , ” said Dorothy . “ And I thought Oz was a lovely Lady , ” said the Scarecrow . “ And I thought Oz was a terrible Beast , ” said the Tin Woodman . “ And I thought Oz was a Ball of Fire , ” said the Lion .
