The balloon was pulling hard at its rope . “ Come , Dorothy ! ” cried Oz . “ Quick , or the balloon will fly away ! ” But Toto had run into the crowd to bark at a kitten . Dorothy found him at last and ran towards the balloon . She was only a few steps away when the rope broke . The balloon rose into the air without her . “ Come back ! ” she screamed . “ I want to go too ! ” “ I can’t come back , my dear , ” called Oz . “ Goodbye ! ” That was the last time anyone saw Oz , the Wonderful Wizard . Perhaps he reached Omaha safely , and perhaps he is there now . But the people remembered him with love , because he built their beautiful city . XIII . Away to the South Dorothy cried bitterly , because her hope of going home was gone . The Tin Woodman cried too . “ Oz gave me my lovely heart , ” he said , “ so I must cry a little for him . Please wipe my tears , so I won’t rust . ” Now the Scarecrow was the ruler of the Emerald City , and the people were proud of him . “ If Dorothy stays here , ” he said from the throne , “ we can all be happy together . ” “ But I want to go home to Kansas , ” cried Dorothy . The Scarecrow thought so hard that the pins and needles stuck out of his head . “ Why not call the Winged Monkeys ? ” he said . “ They can carry you over the desert . ” So Dorothy put on the Golden Cap and said the magic words . The Monkeys flew in through the window , but their King shook his head . “ We belong to this country , and we cannot leave it , ” he said . “ There has never been a Winged Monkey in Kansas . ” And they flew away again . “ I have wasted the magic of the Cap , ” said Dorothy sadly . Then the soldier with the green beard gave them an idea . “ Glinda might help you , ” he said . “ She is the Good Witch of the South , the most powerful of all the witches . Her castle is at the edge of the desert . But the road to the South is full of dangers . ” “ I will go with Dorothy , ” said the Lion . “ She will need someone to protect her . ” “ My axe may be useful too , ” said the Tin Woodman . “ And I will go , ” said the Scarecrow . “ Without Dorothy I would still be on a pole in a cornfield . I will not leave her until she is on her way to Kansas . ” First they came to a forest where the branches caught the Scarecrow and threw him back . But the Tin Woodman cut them with his axe , and they all ran past . Behind the forest lay a little country where the houses , the cows and the people were all made of china , like plates and cups . The tallest of them only came up to Dorothy’s knee . The strangers frightened a china cow , and it fell and broke its leg . After that the travellers walked very carefully .
