After that they came to a great old forest . There they found hundreds of animals at a meeting . A big tiger bowed to the Lion . “ Welcome , King of Beasts ! ” he said . “ Please help us . A monster like a giant spider is eating the animals one by one . ” “ If I kill it , will you obey me as your King ? ” asked the Lion . “ Gladly ! ” roared all the animals . The Lion found the spider asleep and killed it with one blow of his strong paw . Then the animals bowed to him as their King , and he promised to come back soon . Next the travellers came to a rocky hill . A strange man with no arms and a flat head stepped out from behind a rock . “ Keep back ! ” he shouted . “ This hill is ours . ” When the Scarecrow walked on , the man’s head shot out on his long neck and knocked him down the hill . There were hundreds of these men , the Hammer - Heads , and another head knocked down the Lion too . “ Call the Winged Monkeys , ” said the Tin Woodman . “ You can call them one more time . ” So Dorothy called the Monkeys for the third time , and they carried everyone over the hill . “ That was the last time , ” said the Monkey King . “ Goodbye , and good luck ! ” Now they were in the country of the Quadlings . It was a rich , happy land , and everything there was red . Soon the travellers came to Glinda’s beautiful castle , and girl soldiers in red uniforms let them in . XIV . The Silver Shoes Glinda sat on a throne of rubies , which are red jewels . She was beautiful , with long red hair and kind blue eyes . “ What can I do for you , my child ? ” she asked . Dorothy told her whole story . “ Now I want to go back to Kansas , ” she said . “ Aunt Em will think that something terrible has happened to me . ” Glinda kissed her . “ Bless your dear heart , ” she said . “ I can tell you how to get back to Kansas . But first you must give me the Golden Cap . ” “ Gladly ! ” said Dorothy , and she gave it to her . Then Glinda turned to the Scarecrow . “ What will you do when Dorothy has gone ? ” “ I will go back and rule the Emerald City , ” he said . “ But I don’t know how to get over the hill of the Hammer - Heads . ” “ The Winged Monkeys will carry you , ” said Glinda . “ The people must not lose such a wonderful ruler . ” “ Am I really wonderful ? ” asked the Scarecrow . “ You are unusual , ” said Glinda . The Tin Woodman wanted to rule the Winkies , and the Lion wanted to be King in his forest . Glinda promised that the Winged Monkeys would carry each of them home . “ Then I will give the Cap to the Monkey King , ” she said , “ and the Monkeys will be free for ever . ” “ You are as good as you are beautiful ! ” said Dorothy . “ But you haven’t told me how to get back to Kansas . ”
