Just then the Munchkins gave a shout . The feet under the house were gone . Only the silver shoes were left . “ She was so old that she dried up in the sun , ” said the Witch of the North . She shook the dust out of the shoes and gave them to Dorothy . “ These are yours now . ” “ There is some magic in those shoes , ” said one of the Munchkins , “ but we never knew what it was . ” “ Can you help me to get back to Kansas ? ” asked Dorothy . “ My aunt and uncle will be so worried . ” The Munchkins shook their heads . There was a great desert all round the Land of Oz , they said , and nobody could cross it . Dorothy began to cry . But the old woman put the point of her hat on the end of her nose and counted , “ One , two , three ! ” At once the hat changed into a little board . On it were the words LET DOROTHY GO TO THE CITY OF EMERALDS . “ Is your name Dorothy ? ” asked the Witch . “ Then you must go to the Emerald City . Emeralds are beautiful green jewels . Perhaps Oz will help you . I cannot go with you , but I will give you my kiss . Nobody will dare to hurt you after that . ” She kissed Dorothy on the forehead , and her lips left a round , shining mark there . “ The road to the Emerald City is made of yellow bricks , so you cannot miss it . Goodbye , my dear . ” Then she turned round three times on her left heel and disappeared . II . The Scarecrow Dorothy and Toto were alone now . She put on her clean blue and white dress and her pink sun hat . Her old shoes were worn out , so she tried on the silver shoes . They fitted her perfectly . She filled a little basket with bread and started along the road of yellow brick . The land of the Munchkins was lovely . The fences and the round little houses were all blue , because blue was the favourite colour in the East . That night Dorothy stayed with a rich Munchkin called Boq . He looked at her silver shoes . “ You must be a great witch , ” he said . Dorothy only smiled . The next day she sat down on a fence by the road to rest . On the other side was a big field of corn , and near her stood a scarecrow . A scarecrow is a figure of old clothes and straw that frightens birds away from the corn . This one was high up on a pole . His head was a small bag of straw with a painted face . While Dorothy was looking at him , one painted eye slowly winked at her . Then the figure nodded to her in a friendly way . She climbed down and walked up to it , while Toto barked . “ Good day , ” said the Scarecrow in a rough voice . “ Did you speak ? ” asked Dorothy in surprise . “ Of course . But I don’t feel very well , because it is so boring up here on this pole . Could you take the pole away , please ? It is stuck up my back . ”
