Dorothy lifted him down easily , because he was only straw . “ Thank you very much , ” said the Scarecrow . “ I feel like a new man . Who are you , and where are you going ? ” “ My name is Dorothy . I am going to the Emerald City . I want the Great Oz to send me back to Kansas . ” “ Who is Oz ? ” “ Don’t you know ? ” “ No , I don’t know anything , ” he answered sadly . “ My head is full of straw , so I have no brains . Do you think that Oz would give me some ? ” “ I don’t know , ” said Dorothy . “ But you can come with me . If Oz doesn’t give you any brains , you will be no worse than you are now . ” “ That is true , ” said the Scarecrow . “ I don’t mind my body being straw , because I can’t get hurt . But I don’t want people to call me a fool . ” So they walked on together . “ I’ll tell you a secret , ” said the Scarecrow . “ There is only one thing in the world that I am afraid of . ” “ What is that ? ” “ A lighted match . ” At midday they rested , and Dorothy told him about Kansas and how grey and dry it was there . “ Then why do you want to go back ? ” he asked . “ This country is so beautiful . ” “ That is because you have no brains , ” answered Dorothy . “ People of flesh and blood always want to go home , even if their homes are grey . There is no place like home . ” The Scarecrow sighed . “ If your heads were full of straw like mine , ” he said , “ you would all live in beautiful places . It is lucky for Kansas that you have brains . ” Then he told her his short story . He was only two days old . At first the crows were afraid of him in the field . But one day an old crow sat on his shoulder . “ Any clever crow can see that you are only straw , ” it said , and it ate all the corn it wanted . Later it told him , “ With brains in your head , you would be as good as any man . ” That was why the Scarecrow wanted brains so much . In the evening the road went into a great forest . The trees were so close together that it was almost dark under them . “ If this road goes in , it must come out , ” said the Scarecrow . When it was dark , they found a little wooden house , and Dorothy slept there on a bed of leaves . The Scarecrow never got tired , so he stood in a corner until morning . III . The Tin Woodman In the morning Dorothy was eating her breakfast by a little stream when she heard a deep groan nearby . She and the Scarecrow followed the sound . Next to a big tree stood a man made of tin , a grey metal . He was a woodman , a man who cuts down trees . He was holding his axe high in the air , but he did not move at all . “ Did you groan ? ” asked Dorothy .
