“ All the same , I will ask for brains , ” said the Scarecrow . “ A fool would not know what to do with a heart . ” “ And I will take the heart , ” said the Tin Woodman . “ Brains do not make anyone happy , and happiness is the best thing in the world . ” Dorothy did not know which of her friends was right . She was more worried about her bread , because the basket was nearly empty . IV . The Cowardly Lion Now the forest was very dark . Sometimes they heard the deep growl of a wild animal among the trees . Dorothy’s heart beat fast , and Toto walked close to her . Just then a terrible roar came from the forest , and a great Lion jumped into the road . With one blow of his paw he sent the Scarecrow rolling away . Then he struck the Tin Woodman with his sharp claws . The Woodman fell over , but the claws could not hurt the tin . Little Toto ran at the Lion , barking , and the Lion opened his great mouth . Dorothy forgot all danger . She ran forward and hit the Lion on the nose as hard as she could . “ Don’t you dare bite Toto ! ” she cried . “ You should be ashamed of yourself , a big animal like you ! Trying to bite a poor little dog ! You are nothing but a big coward . ” “ I know it , ” said the Lion , and he hung his head . “ I have always known it . But how can I help it ? ” Dorothy picked up the Scarecrow and patted him into shape again . “ Is he made of straw ? ” asked the Lion in surprise . “ And that little animal ? Is he made of straw too ? ” “ No . He’s a . . . a meat dog , ” said Dorothy . “ He is very small . Nobody would try to bite such a little thing , except a coward like me , ” said the Lion sadly . “ But why are you a coward ? ” asked Dorothy . The Lion was as big as a small horse . “ I suppose I was born that way . All the other animals think that I am brave , because the Lion is the King of Beasts . If I roar loudly , everyone runs away . But if an elephant or a tiger ever tried to fight me , I would run away myself . Whenever there is danger , my heart beats very fast . ” “ Then you should be glad , ” said the Tin Woodman . “ It shows that you have a heart . I have none at all . ” The Scarecrow told the Lion about Oz . “ Do you think Oz could give me courage ? ” asked the Lion . “ As easily as he can give me brains , ” said the Scarecrow . “ Then , if you don’t mind , I will come with you . My life is terrible without courage . ” “ You are very welcome , ” said Dorothy . “ You will help to keep the other wild animals away . ” So the Lion walked next to Dorothy , and soon he and Toto became good friends .
