That afternoon the Tin Woodman stepped on a little beetle by accident and killed it . He cried , and his tears rusted his jaw . He could not speak until the Scarecrow oiled it . “ People with hearts have something to guide them , ” he said . “ But I have no heart , so I must be very careful . ” That night Dorothy ate the last of her bread by the fire . The Lion offered to kill a deer for her breakfast . “ Please don’t ! ” begged the Tin Woodman . “ I would cry , and my jaw would rust again . ” So the Scarecrow filled her basket with nuts instead . He stayed far from the fire , because he was always afraid of sparks . V . The Kalidahs The next morning they came to a ditch across the road , a long , deep hole in the ground . Its sides were too steep to climb , and there were sharp rocks at the bottom . “ I think I could jump over it , ” said the Lion . “ Then you can carry us over , one at a time , ” said the Scarecrow . “ I will go first . If you fall , the rocks cannot hurt me . ” “ I am terribly afraid of falling , ” said the Lion , “ but I will try . ” He made a great jump and landed safely on the other side . Then he came back for the others , one by one . On this side they heard strange noises among the trees . “ This is the country of the Kalidahs , ” whispered the Lion . “ They have bodies like bears and heads like tigers . Their claws could tear me in two . I’m terribly afraid of them . ” Then they came to a second ditch , much wider than the first . But the Scarecrow had an idea . “ The Tin Woodman can chop down this tall tree . It will fall across the ditch , and we can walk over it . ” “ What a good idea ! ” said the Lion . “ Anyone would think that you had brains , not straw . ” Soon the tree fell across the ditch with a crash . They were just starting to cross when they heard a sharp growl . Two huge beasts were running towards them . “ The Kalidahs ! ” cried the Lion , and he began to shake . “ Quick ! ” said the Scarecrow . “ Let’s cross over ! ” The others ran across . The Lion was afraid , but he turned to face the Kalidahs . He gave such a terrible roar that Dorothy screamed . Even the Kalidahs stopped for a moment . But there were two of them , and they were bigger than the Lion . So they ran on . The Lion crossed the tree and turned round . The Kalidahs were already crossing after him . “ We are lost , ” said the Lion . “ But stand behind me . I will fight them as long as I am alive . ” “ Wait ! ” called the Scarecrow . “ Cut the tree on this side ! ” The Woodman swung his axe . Just as the Kalidahs were nearly across , the tree fell into the ditch . The two terrible animals fell with it onto the rocks , and they never came up again . “ Those animals frightened me so much that my heart is still beating fast , ” said the Lion . “ Ah , ” said the Tin Woodman sadly , “ I wish I had a heart to beat . ” In the afternoon they came out of the forest to a wide river . On the other side they could see the yellow brick road . So the Tin Woodman built a raft , a flat boat made of pieces of wood .
