VI . The Poppy Field The next morning they got on the raft . The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman pushed it with long poles . But in the middle the river was fast and deep , and it carried them away from the road . The Scarecrow pushed so hard that his pole stuck in the mud . Before he could pull it out , the raft moved on . The poor Scarecrow was left hanging on his pole in the middle of the river . Then the Lion jumped into the water . “ Hold my tail , ” he said , and he swam to the bank , pulling the raft after him . They walked back along the river and soon saw the Scarecrow on his pole , looking very lonely . Luckily a kind stork , a big white bird , was flying past , and Dorothy asked her for help . The Stork took the Scarecrow by the arm and carried him back to the bank . He was so happy that he hugged everyone , even the Lion and Toto . Now they walked through a country full of flowers . More and more of them were big red poppies . When many poppies grow together , their smell makes people fall asleep . And if a sleeper stays among the flowers , he sleeps for ever . Dorothy did not know this . Soon she fell among the flowers , fast asleep , and Toto fell asleep next to her . “ If we leave her here , she will die , ” said the Lion . “ I can hardly keep my eyes open myself . ” The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were not made of flesh , so the poppies could not hurt them . “ Run ! ” the Scarecrow told the Lion . “ Get out of this field . We can carry Dorothy , but you are too big to carry . ” So the Lion ran off as fast as he could . The other two made a chair with their hands and carried Dorothy and Toto . Near the end of the field they found the Lion , fast asleep . The flowers were too strong for him . “ He is too heavy to lift , ” said the Tin Woodman sadly . They carried Dorothy out of the field and waited for the fresh air to wake her . Suddenly a big yellow wildcat came running over the grass . In front of it ran a little grey field mouse . The Tin Woodman lifted his axe and struck the wildcat , and it fell dead at his feet . “ Thank you for saving my life ! ” said the mouse in a tiny voice . “ I am the Queen of all the Field Mice . Can I do anything for you ? ” “ Yes , ” said the Scarecrow . “ You can save our friend the Lion . He is asleep in the poppy field . ” “ A Lion ! ” cried the Queen . “ He will eat us all ! ” “ No , ” said the Scarecrow . “ This Lion is a coward . How many mice will obey you ? ”
