“ Thousands . ” “ Then send for them all . Tell each one to bring a long piece of string . ” Meanwhile the Tin Woodman made a little cart with wooden wheels . Soon thousands of mice arrived , each with a string . At that moment Dorothy woke up , and she was very surprised to see so many mice . The friends tied the mice to the cart , and the mice pulled it to the Lion . With a lot of work , the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman lifted him onto it . The mice pulled , the two friends pushed , and at last the Lion was out of the poppies . “ If you ever need us again , ” said the Queen , “ come into the field and call . ” Then all the mice ran home . VII . The Emerald City When the Lion woke up , he was very glad to be alive . “ I always thought that I was big and terrible , ” he laughed . “ But little flowers nearly killed me , and little mice saved my life ! ” Soon they found the yellow brick road again . Now the houses were green , and the people wore green clothes . “ I have never seen Oz , ” said a farmer . “ Nobody has . He can take any shape he likes . ” The next day they came to the great green wall of the city . At the end of the road there was a big gate covered with emeralds , and Dorothy rang the bell . A little man dressed all in green opened it . “ What do you want in the Emerald City ? ” he asked . “ We came to see the Great Oz , ” said Dorothy . The man was so surprised that he sat down . “ Nobody has asked me that for many years , ” he said . “ Oz is powerful and terrible . Well , I am the Guardian of the Gates , and I will take you to the Palace . But first you must put on spectacles , or the city will make you blind . ” Spectacles are glasses . The Guardian had a big box full of them , all with green glass . He put a pair on Dorothy and locked them at the back of her head with a little key . Then he put spectacles on all the others , even on Toto . The city was so bright that Dorothy could hardly look at it . The houses were made of green stone with emeralds in it , and even the sky looked green . In the shops everything was green , from sweets to shoes . The children bought green lemonade with green pennies . In the middle of the city stood the Palace of Oz . A soldier with a long green beard took their message to Oz . “ Oz will see you , ” he said when he came back . “ But only one of you each day . ” A girl with green hair took them to their rooms . The next morning Dorothy went into the Throne Room alone . In the middle stood a throne of green stone , and on it there was an enormous Head , with no body , no arms and no legs . The eyes turned slowly and looked at her , and the mouth moved .
