“ I am Oz , the Great and Terrible . Who are you , and why have you come to me ? ” The voice was not as terrible as she expected . “ I am Dorothy , the Small and Weak , ” she answered . “ I have come to you for help . ” “ Where did you get the silver shoes ? ” “ From the Wicked Witch of the East , when my house fell on her . ” “ And the mark on your forehead ? ” “ That is where the good Witch of the North kissed me . ” “ What do you want me to do ? ” “ Send me back to Kansas . Aunt Em will be so worried about me . ” The eyes looked at her for a long time . “ In this country everyone must pay for what he gets , ” said the Head . “ If you want my help , you must help me first . Kill the Wicked Witch of the West . ” “ But I can’t ! ” cried Dorothy . “ You killed the Witch of the East , and you wear the silver shoes . Tell me that the Witch of the West is dead , and I will send you back to Kansas . But not before . ” Dorothy began to cry . “ I never wanted to kill anything , ” she said . “ You are Great and Terrible . If you cannot kill her , how can I ? ” “ I do not know , ” said the Head . “ But that is my answer . Now go . ” Dorothy went sadly back to her friends . That night she cried herself to sleep . VIII . The Four Shapes of Oz The next morning it was the Scarecrow’s turn . On the green throne he saw a lovely Lady in a dress of green silk . She had a crown of jewels on her head and light , beautiful wings on her shoulders . “ I am Oz , the Great and Terrible , ” she said sweetly . “ Who are you , and why have you come to me ? ” The Scarecrow was surprised , but he answered bravely . “ I am only a Scarecrow , stuffed with straw . Please put brains into my head , so I can be a man like any other . ” “ I never do anything without payment , ” said the Lady . “ Kill the Wicked Witch of the West . Then I will make you the wisest man in the Land of Oz . ” “ That Lady needs a heart as much as the Tin Woodman does , ” the Scarecrow told his friends later . The next day the Tin Woodman went in . This time a terrible Beast sat on the throne . It was almost as big as an elephant . It had a head like a rhinoceros with five eyes , and it had five long arms and five thin legs . Luckily the Tin Woodman had no heart , so he was not afraid , only disappointed . “ I am Oz , the Great and Terrible , ” roared the Beast . “ Who are you , and why have you come to me ? ” “ I am a Woodman made of tin . I have no heart , so I cannot love . Please give me a heart . ” “ Then you must earn it , ” said the Beast . “ Help Dorothy to kill the Wicked Witch of the West . Then I will give you the kindest heart in the Land of Oz . ”
