On the fourth morning it was the Lion’s turn . He found a Ball of Fire in front of the throne . It was so hot that it burned his whiskers , and he moved back towards the door , shaking . “ I am Oz , the Great and Terrible , ” said a low , quiet voice from the fire . “ Who are you , and why have you come to me ? ” “ I am a Cowardly Lion , afraid of everything . Please give me courage , so I can really be the King of Beasts . ” “ Bring me proof that the Wicked Witch is dead . Then I will give you courage . But while the Witch lives , you must stay a coward . ” The fire became so hot that the Lion turned and ran out of the room . “ What shall we do now ? ” asked Dorothy sadly . “ There is only one thing we can do , ” said the Lion . “ We must go to the land of the Winkies in the West . We must find the Wicked Witch and destroy her . ” “ But what if we can’t ? ” “ Then I will never have courage , ” said the Lion . “ And I will never have brains , ” said the Scarecrow . “ And I will never have a heart , ” said the Tin Woodman . “ And I will never see Aunt Em and Uncle Henry again , ” said Dorothy , and she began to cry . “ I don’t want to kill anybody . But I suppose we must try . ” “ I am too much of a coward to kill the Witch , ” said the Lion . “ But I will come with you . ” “ I haven’t the heart to hurt even a witch , ” said the Tin Woodman . “ But if you go , I will go with you . ” IX . The Wicked Witch of the West At the gate the Guardian took off their spectacles . “ Which road goes to the Wicked Witch of the West ? ” asked Dorothy . “ There is no road , ” he said . “ Nobody ever wants to go there . Just walk west , where the sun goes down . When she sees you in her country , she will find you . ” So they walked west . Dorothy was wearing a green silk dress from the Palace . To her surprise , it was now pure white . In the evening Dorothy , Toto and the Lion lay down to sleep , and the other two kept watch . The Wicked Witch of the West had only one eye , but it could see very far . When she saw the strangers in her country , she was very angry . She blew her silver whistle , and forty great wolves came running . “ Go to those strangers and tear them to pieces , ” she ordered . But the Tin Woodman heard them coming . “ This is my fight , ” he said , and he swung his sharp axe again and again . At last all forty wolves lay still in front of him . The next morning the Witch blew her whistle twice , and forty wild crows flew towards the travellers . “ This is my fight , ” said the Scarecrow . The crows were afraid of him at first , but then they flew at him . The Scarecrow caught them one by one , and soon all forty lay still on the grass .
