He could not help it . He cried as if his heart was broken . Then he went upstairs to the quiet room where Tiny Tim lay , and he sat beside him for a while . When he came down again , he was calmer . He told them about the kindness of Mr Scrooge’s nephew . Fred met him in the street and saw that he looked sad . He was very kind to Bob , and he offered to help the family . “ We will never forget poor Tiny Tim , ” said Bob . “ He was so patient and gentle . When we remember him , we will not quarrel easily among ourselves . ” “ No , never , Father ! ” they all cried . “ Spirit , ” said Scrooge , “ our time together is nearly over . Tell me , who was that dead man ? ” The Phantom took him to a lonely churchyard full of old stones and weeds . It pointed down at one of the graves . Scrooge moved towards it , shaking . “ Before I come nearer , ” he said , “ answer me one question . Are these the shadows of things that will be ? Or are they only shadows of things that may be ? If a man changes his life , the end will change too . Tell me that it is so ! ” The Phantom still pointed down at the grave . Scrooge crept nearer . He followed the finger and read on the stone his own name : EBENEZER SCROOGE . “ No , Spirit ! Oh no , no ! ” he cried , and he fell on his knees . “ I am not the man I was . Why show me this , if there is no hope for me ? I will keep Christmas in my heart , and I will try to keep it all the year . I will live in the Past , the Present and the Future . I will not forget the lessons of all three Spirits . Oh , tell me that I can rub away the writing on this stone ! ” He caught the Phantom’s hand and held it . As he prayed , the Phantom began to change . Its hood and robe shrank and fell , and it turned into a bedpost . X . Christmas Morning Yes ! The bedpost was his own . The bed was his own , and the room was his own . Best of all , the time in front of him was his own too , and he could still make up for his mistakes ! “ I will live in the Past , the Present and the Future ! ” said Scrooge as he climbed out of bed . “ Oh , Jacob Marley ! Thank Heaven for this , and thank Christmas ! I say it on my knees , old Jacob ! ” He was laughing and crying at the same time . He held his bed curtains in his arms . “ They’re not taken down ! ” he cried . “ They’re here , and I’m here ! The shadows can still change . I know they can ! ” “ I don’t know what to do ! ” he said . “ I’m as light as a feather and as happy as a schoolboy . A merry Christmas to everybody ! A happy New Year to all the world ! Ha , ha , ha ! ” It was a wonderful laugh , and it was his first real laugh in many years . Then the church bells began to ring out loud and clear . Scrooge ran to the window and opened it . There was no fog . It was a clear , bright , cold day with golden sunlight .
