“ Spirit ! ” said Scrooge in a broken voice . “ Take me away from this place ! ” “ I told you these were shadows of things that were , ” said the Ghost . “ Do not blame me ! ” “ I can’t bear it ! ” cried Scrooge . “ Leave me alone ! ” He saw that the Ghost’s light was burning high and bright , and he felt that it was the cause of his pain . So he took the cap and pressed it down hard on the Ghost’s head . The Spirit sank under it , but Scrooge could not hide the light . It streamed out from under the cap and ran along the floor . Suddenly he felt very tired . He was in his own bedroom again . He had just enough time to get to his bed , and then he fell into a heavy sleep . VI . The Ghost of Christmas Present Scrooge woke up in the middle of a loud snore . This time he wanted to be ready , so he pulled back the curtains of his bed himself and watched the room . The bell struck one , but nothing came . For a quarter of an hour he lay in a strange red light , and this was worse than a dozen ghosts . At last he saw that the light came from the next room . He got up and went softly to the door . “ Come in ! ” called a big voice . “ Come in , and know me better , man ! ” It was his own room , but it looked very different now . The walls were covered with green leaves of holly and ivy , and red berries were shining everywhere . A great fire was roaring in the fireplace . On the floor there was a huge pile of food : turkeys , geese , sausages , mince pies , puddings , apples , oranges and hot chestnuts . On top of the pile sat a jolly giant with a burning torch in his hand . “ I am the Ghost of Christmas Present , ” said the Spirit . “ Look at me ! ” The Spirit wore a simple green robe with white fur at the edges . His feet were bare , and on his long dark hair there was a crown of holly . His face was kind , his eyes were bright , and his voice was cheerful . “ You have never seen anyone like me before ! ” he said . “ I have more than eighteen hundred brothers , because there is a new Christmas every year . ” “ That’s a huge family to feed ! ” said Scrooge quietly . Then he added humbly , “ Spirit , take me where you like . Last night I learnt a lesson . If you have something to teach me tonight , let me learn it . ” “ Touch my robe ! ” Scrooge held on to the robe . At once the room was gone , and they were standing in the city streets on Christmas morning . People were clearing the snow from the paths , and boys were throwing snowballs . Everybody seemed happy . The shops were bright with fruit , cakes , tea and coffee . Then the church bells rang , and people came out in their best clothes and with their happiest faces .
