“ Gives us this feast , indeed ! ” cried Mrs Cratchit , and her face went red . “ I wish he was here . I would give him a piece of my mind ! He is a hard , mean man , Robert . Nobody knows it better than you , poor fellow ! ” “ My dear , ” said Bob gently , “ the children ! It’s Christmas Day . ” “ Then I’ll drink to him for your sake and for the day’s sake , ” said Mrs Cratchit , “ not for his . A merry Christmas and a happy New Year to him ! He’ll be very merry and very happy , I’m sure ! ” The children drank after her , but there was no joy in it . For five whole minutes the name of Scrooge was like a dark cloud over the family . After that they were ten times merrier than before . Bob told them about a possible job for Peter . Martha told them about her work in the hat shop . Then Tiny Tim sang a song about a lost child in the snow . He had a sad little voice , and he sang very well . It was not a rich family . Their clothes were thin , and their shoes let in the rain . But they were happy and thankful , and they loved each other . When they faded away , Scrooge kept his eyes on them until the last moment , and on Tiny Tim most of all . VIII . Fred’s Party It was getting dark , and snow was falling . The Spirit and Scrooge flew far away over the land and the sea . Everywhere , in a lonely miners ’ village , in a lighthouse and on a ship , people were wishing each other a merry Christmas . Then , to Scrooge’s great surprise , he heard a loud , happy laugh . It was his nephew’s laugh . Scrooge and the Spirit were standing in Fred’s bright , warm house , and the room was full of family and friends . “ Ha , ha ! ” laughed Fred . “ He said that Christmas was a humbug ! And he believed it too ! ” “ More shame for him , Fred ! ” said his pretty young wife . “ He’s a funny old fellow , ” said Fred . “ But his bad temper hurts only one person , and that is himself . He’s very rich , but his money does him no good . He won’t come to dinner with us , so he loses some pleasant hours with us . I’m sorry for him . I couldn’t be angry with him if I tried . I’m going to invite him every year , whether he likes it or not . Perhaps one day he’ll leave his poor clerk fifty pounds . That’s something ! ” After tea they had some music . Fred’s wife played the harp , and she played a simple old tune . Scrooge knew it at once . His little sister Fan knew it long ago . His heart grew softer and softer . “ If I heard this music every day , ” he thought , “ I could learn to be kind . ” Then they played games . First they played blind man’s buff . Fred’s friend Topper had his eyes covered , but he always seemed to know where the plump sister was . He chased her all over the room , and everybody laughed . Scrooge joined in the games too , although nobody could hear him . He shouted out the answers , and he was often right .
