All afternoon Holmes sat at the concert , perfectly happy . He moved his long , thin fingers gently in time with the music , and his face was soft and dreamy . He did not look at all like a hunter of criminals . “ This business at Coburg Square is serious , ” he said as we came out . “ Someone is planning a big crime . I believe that we shall be in time to stop it . But today is Saturday , and that makes things more difficult . I shall want your help tonight . Come to Baker Street at ten . And , Doctor , there may be a little danger , so please put your army revolver in your pocket . ” He waved his hand and was lost in the crowd in a moment . With Sherlock Holmes I always felt a little slow . I heard what he heard , and I saw what he saw . Yet he clearly knew what was going to happen , and to me it was all still a puzzle . Why did I need a gun tonight ? I could not work it out . At ten o’clock I arrived at Baker Street . Holmes was talking with two men . One was Peter Jones , a police detective from Scotland Yard . The other was a long , thin , sad - faced man with a very shiny hat . “ Now we are all here , ” said Holmes . He took his heavy riding whip from the wall . “ Watson , you know Mr Jones . This is Mr Merryweather , who is coming with us tonight . ” “ I hope this is not a wild goose chase , a hunt for nothing , ” said Mr Merryweather sadly . “ For twenty - seven years I have played cards every Saturday night . Tonight I am missing my game . ” “ Tonight you will play for more money than ever before , ” said Holmes . “ For you , Mr Merryweather , the prize is about thirty thousand pounds . And for you , Jones , it is the man you want to catch . ” “ John Clay , the thief , ” said Jones . “ He is young , but he is at the top of his profession . His grandfather was a royal duke , and he went to Eton and Oxford . His brain is as quick as his fingers . I have been after him for years , and I have never even seen him . ” “ I hope I can introduce you to him tonight , ” said Holmes . “ It is time to go . ” V . Under the Bank Our cabs took us back to the busy road where we stood that morning . Mr Merryweather took us through a side door , past two heavy iron gates and down some stone steps . With a lantern he led us into a huge cellar . All round the walls there were piles of heavy wooden boxes . “ Nobody can come in here from above , ” said Holmes , looking round . “ Or from below , ” said Mr Merryweather , and he hit the stone floor with his stick . “ Why , dear me ! It sounds hollow ! ” “ I must ask you to be quieter ! ” said Holmes sharply . “ You have already put our whole plan in danger . Please sit down on one of those boxes . ”
