“ Then we visited the square . I hit the pavement with my stick to find out if the cellar went out towards the front . It did not . Then I knocked , and the assistant opened the door , as I hoped . I did not look at his face . I wanted to see his knees . You must have noticed how worn and dusty they were . They told of hours and hours of digging . But what were they digging towards ? I walked round the corner and saw that the bank stood back to back with our friend’s house . So I knew I had the answer . After the concert I visited Scotland Yard and the head of the bank . ” “ And how could you tell that they would come last night ? ” “ When they closed the League office , they did not need Mr Wilson out of the way any more . So the tunnel was finished . They had to use it soon , before someone found it or the gold was moved . And Saturday was the best day for them , because it gave them two days to escape . ” “ You worked it out beautifully , ” I cried . “ It is such a long chain , and yet every link is true . ” “ It saved me from boredom , ” he answered with a yawn . “ My life is one long effort to escape from ordinary days . These little problems help me . ” VI . Story Two : The Speckled Band I have notes on more than seventy cases of my friend Sherlock Holmes . But I cannot remember a stranger one than the case of the Roylotts of Stoke Moran , in Surrey . At the time I promised a lady that I would keep it secret . She died last month , so now I am free to tell the true story . One morning in April 1883 , when we still shared rooms in Baker Street , Holmes woke me at a quarter past seven . A young lady was waiting for us in the sitting room . She was dressed in black , with a thick veil over her face . “ Good morning , madam , ” said Holmes . “ My name is Sherlock Holmes , and this is my friend Dr Watson . Please come closer to the fire . I see that you are shivering . ” “ It is not the cold that makes me shiver , ” she said quietly . “ It is fear , Mr Holmes . It is terror . ” She lifted her veil . Her face was tired and grey , and her eyes moved about like the eyes of a hunted animal . She looked about thirty years old , but her hair was already going grey . “ You must not be afraid , ” said Holmes kindly . “ I see that you came in by train this morning . ” “ You know me , then ? ” “ No , but I can see the second half of a return ticket in your left glove . And before you reached the station , you had a long drive in a dog - cart along muddy roads . The left arm of your jacket has fresh mud on it in seven places . Only a dog - cart , a small open carriage with two wheels , throws up mud like that . And only when you sit on the left of the driver . ” “ You are perfectly right , ” she said . “ I left home before six . Oh , sir , I cannot bear this any longer . Can you help me ? I cannot pay you now , but in a few weeks I shall be married , and then I shall have my own money . ”
