Holmes shook his head . “ These are very deep waters , ” he said . “ Please go on . ” “ A month ago a dear friend , Percy Armitage , asked me to marry him . Two days ago builders made a hole in my bedroom wall , so I had to move into my sister’s room . I sleep in her bed . And last night , as I lay awake , I heard the low whistle . I lit the lamp , but there was nothing in the room . As soon as it was light , I got a dog - cart at the Crown Inn , across the road from our house , and I came to you . ” “ You have done wisely , ” said my friend . “ But have you told me everything ? ” “ Yes , everything . ” “ Miss Stoner , you have not . You are protecting your stepfather . ” Holmes pushed back the black lace at the edge of her sleeve . On her white wrist there were five small dark marks : the marks of four fingers and a thumb . The lady went red and covered her wrist . “ He is a hard man , ” she said , “ and perhaps he does not know how strong he is . ” “ We have not a moment to lose , ” said Holmes . “ If we came to Stoke Moran today , could we see these rooms without your stepfather knowing ? ” “ He is coming to London today on business . ” “ Then we shall come this afternoon . ” Miss Stoner dropped her veil over her face and left the room . VIII . A Visitor with a Poker “ What do you think , Watson ? ” asked Holmes . “ If the door , the window and the chimney were all closed , her sister was alone when she died . ” “ Then what about the whistles in the night ? And her strange last words ? Put these things together . There are whistles at night . There is a band of travelling people who are very friendly with the old doctor . The doctor has good reason to stop his stepdaughter’s marriage . There are the dying woman’s words about a band . And Miss Stoner heard a metal clang . Perhaps it was one of the metal bars of the shutters falling back into its place . I think the answer may lie there . ” “ But then what did the travelling people do ? ” “ I cannot imagine . That is exactly why we are going to Stoke Moran . But what on earth … ? ” Our door suddenly flew open , and a huge man stood in the doorway . He had a riding whip in his hand , and he was so tall that his hat touched the top of the door frame . With his yellow , lined face and his high , thin nose , he looked like a fierce old bird . “ Which of you is Holmes ? ” he asked . “ That is my name , sir , ” said my friend quietly . “ I am Dr Grimesby Roylott , of Stoke Moran . My stepdaughter has been here . I followed her . What has she been saying to you ? ” “ It is a little cold for the time of year , ” said Holmes . “ What has she been saying to you ? ” screamed the old man . “ But I hear that the spring flowers will be lovely , ” my friend went on calmly .
