I . The Old Quarrel Long ago , in the Italian city of Verona , there were two great families , the Capulets and the Montagues . Both families were rich , and both were very proud . For many years there was a bitter quarrel between them . Nobody could remember how it began , but the hate never stopped . It passed from fathers to sons , and even the servants of the two houses hated each other . This is the story of a young man and a young woman from these two houses . They loved each other , and in the end their love brought peace to Verona . But the price of that peace was very high . One hot Sunday morning in July , two Capulet servants , Sampson and Gregory , were walking through the town square with swords at their sides . They were looking for trouble . When two Montague servants came across the square , Sampson looked at them and bit his thumb . In those days this was a very rude sign . “ Are you biting your thumb at us , sir ? ” asked one of the Montague men . “ I am biting my thumb , sir , ” said Sampson . He did not want the law against him , so he did not say yes . But he did not say no either . A few angry words later , all four men pulled out their swords . Just then Benvolio walked into the square . He was Lord Montague’s nephew , a calm and sensible young man . He drew his sword , but only to separate the servants . At that moment Tybalt arrived . He was Lady Capulet’s nephew , and he had a terrible temper . Nothing made him happier than a fight . “ Turn round , Benvolio , and fight me , ” he said . “ I’m only trying to keep the peace , ” said Benvolio . “ Put your sword away , or help me to stop these men . ” “ Peace ? ” said Tybalt . “ I hate that word , as I hate hell and all the Montagues and you . Fight , coward ! ” Soon the fight grew bigger . Men ran into the square from both houses , and people from the town came with sticks . Old Lord Capulet came out in his dressing gown and shouted for his sword , and old Lord Montague came out with his sword in his hand . Their wives tried to hold them back . Then Prince Escalus arrived with his guards . He was the ruler of Verona , and he was very angry . “ Throw down your weapons and listen to your prince ! ” he shouted . “ Three times your stupid quarrel has broken the peace of our streets . If you ever fight here again , you will pay for it with your lives . Capulet , come with me now . Montague , come to me this afternoon . Everyone else , go home . ” The crowd left , and only Lord and Lady Montague stayed in the square with Benvolio . “ Where is Romeo ? ” asked Lady Montague . “ I’m so glad that he wasn’t in this fight . ” Romeo was their only son . Benvolio had seen him early that morning , walking alone under the trees outside the city walls .
