X . The Friar’s Potion At Friar Lawrence’s cell , Juliet found the one person that she did not want to see . Count Paris was there , talking to the Friar about the wedding . He greeted Juliet warmly as his future wife , and she answered him politely but carefully . At last he kissed her and left . As soon as the door closed , Juliet turned to the Friar . “ Oh , shut the door , and then come and cry with me , ” she said . “ There is no hope , no cure , no help ! ” “ I know your sorrow already , ” said the Friar . “ I hear that you must marry the Count on Thursday . ” Juliet took a knife from her dress . “ God joined my heart and Romeo’s , and you joined our hands , ” she said . “ I will never give my hand to another man . If you can’t help me , I’ll help myself with this knife , now . ” “ Wait , daughter , I see a kind of hope , ” said the Friar . “ But it is a dangerous plan . You are brave enough to kill yourself rather than marry Paris . So perhaps you are brave enough to try something that only looks like death . ” “ I will do anything , and I won’t be afraid , ” said Juliet , “ if I can stay a faithful wife to my love . ” The Friar took a small bottle from a shelf . “ Then listen , ” he said . “ Go home , be cheerful , and agree to marry Paris . Tomorrow is Wednesday . Tomorrow night , sleep alone , without the Nurse . When you are in bed , drink this potion . ” A potion is a drink with a special power , like a medicine or a magic drink . “ Soon a cold , sleepy feeling will spread through your body , ” the Friar went on . “ Your heart will stop , and there will be no breath in you . You will be stiff and cold , like a dead body , for forty - two hours . Then you will wake , as if from a pleasant sleep . In the morning , when Paris comes , he will find you dead . As our custom is , your family will dress you in your best clothes and carry you to the old tomb of the Capulets . Meanwhile I will write to Romeo and tell him everything . He will come here , and he and I will watch for your waking . That same night Romeo will take you away to Mantua . ” “ Give it to me ! ” said Juliet . “ Don’t talk to me about fear ! ” “ Take it , then . Be strong . I’ll send my letter to Mantua quickly . ” Juliet went home . She knelt in front of her father and asked him to forgive her . “ From now on I will always obey you , ” she said . Old Capulet was so delighted that he changed the wedding day again . “ We’ll have the wedding tomorrow morning ! ” he cried . So now the wedding was on Wednesday , one day earlier than before , and Juliet had to drink the potion that same night . That night Juliet asked her mother and the Nurse to leave her alone , because she wanted to pray .
