When Balthasar had gone , Romeo spoke quietly to himself . “ Well , Juliet , I will lie with you tonight . ” He had already made up his mind . He wanted to die beside her . He remembered a poor chemist , a man who sold medicines in a little shop not far away . The man was very thin , and his shop was almost empty . Romeo went there and knocked on the door . He offered the man forty gold coins for a strong , quick poison . “ I have such deadly drugs , ” said the chemist , and he looked frightened . “ But in Mantua the punishment for selling them is death . ” “ You are so poor , and still you are afraid to die ? ” said Romeo . “ The world is not your friend , and the world’s law is not your friend either . So break it , and take this money . ” In the end the poor man gave him a small bottle . Romeo paid him and left for Verona . Back in Verona , Friar Lawrence was waiting for an answer from Mantua . At last his friend Friar John arrived , and Friar Lawrence hurried to meet him . “ Welcome back from Mantua ! ” he said . “ What does Romeo say ? ” Friar John shook his head . “ I never got to Mantua , ” he said . “ Before I left , I went to find another friar to travel with me . The town officials thought that we were both in a house with the plague , so they locked the doors and didn’t let us out . Here is your letter again . Nobody wanted to carry it , because everyone was so afraid of the illness . ” Friar Lawrence went pale . “ Oh , bad luck ! ” he said . “ That letter was very important . Now there may be great danger . Friar John , go and bring me an iron bar at once . ” When Friar John had gone , Friar Lawrence thought quickly . In three hours Juliet was going to wake , alone in the tomb . He had to go there himself . He could hide her in his cell and write to Romeo again . “ Poor living girl , ” he said , “ locked in a dead man’s tomb ! ” XII . The Tomb It was late at night in the churchyard in Verona . Count Paris came with his page , a young servant , to put flowers at the door of Juliet’s tomb . He told the boy to whistle if anyone came . Soon the boy whistled , and Paris stepped back into the shadows . Romeo arrived with Balthasar and took a torch and an iron bar from him . “ Take this letter , ” said Romeo to his servant . “ Early in the morning , give it to my father . Now go away , and don’t come back to watch me . Tonight I am as wild as a hungry tiger . ” Balthasar went , but he did not go far . He was afraid of the look in his master’s eyes , so he hid among the trees . Romeo began to open the tomb with the iron bar . Paris saw him , and he stepped forward angrily . “ This is the banished Montague who killed Juliet’s cousin ! ” he said . People said that Juliet had died of grief for Tybalt . Paris thought that Romeo wanted to do some shameful thing to the dead . He drew his sword . “ Stop , Montague ! Come with me , because you must die . ”
