“ He often walks there before sunrise , ” said Lord Montague sadly . “ Something is making him very unhappy , but he won’t tell us what it is . ” Soon Romeo came by , and Benvolio went to talk to him . Romeo was a handsome young man , but today he looked pale and tired . Slowly Benvolio learnt the truth . Romeo was in love with a beautiful young woman , but she did not love him . In fact , she did not want to marry anyone at all . She did not care about his letters or his sighs , and so Romeo spent his days in tears . “ Forget her , ” said Benvolio . “ Look at some other beautiful girls . ” “ That will only show me how much more beautiful she is , ” said Romeo . “ You can’t teach me to forget her . ” “ I will teach you , ” said Benvolio , “ or die trying . ” II . An Invitation That afternoon , old Lord Capulet was walking home with Count Paris . Paris was a young nobleman and a relative of the Prince . He wanted to marry Capulet’s daughter , Juliet . “ My daughter is still very young , ” said Capulet . “ She isn’t fourteen yet . Wait two more summers before you make her your bride . But try to win her heart , good Paris . If she chooses you , I will agree . Tonight I’m having a feast in my house . Come as my guest . You will see the loveliest young ladies of Verona there . ” Capulet gave a list of names to one of his servants . “ Go through the town , ” he said , “ and invite all the people on this list to my house tonight . ” Then he walked off with Paris . The servant looked at the paper and scratched his head . There was only one problem . He could not read . Just then Romeo and Benvolio came down the street , and the servant asked Romeo for help . Romeo read the list aloud . Among the names was Capulet’s niece , the lovely Rosaline . “ My master is the great , rich Capulet , ” said the servant happily . “ If you aren’t Montagues , come and drink a cup of wine with us ! ” And he hurried away . Benvolio turned to his friend . “ Rosaline , the girl you love , will be at this feast , ” he said . “ Let’s go too . When you compare her face with the faces of the other girls , your swan will look like a crow . ” “ There is no lady more beautiful than her , ” said Romeo . “ But I’ll go , just to see her . ” At the same time , in the Capulet house , Lady Capulet was looking for her daughter . With her was Juliet’s Nurse , a warm and very talkative old woman . The Nurse had looked after Juliet from the day she was born , and she loved her like her own child . “ Juliet ! ” called the Nurse . “ Where are you , my little lamb ? Your mother wants you . ” Juliet came in , and Lady Capulet began to speak about her age . The Nurse at once interrupted . She knew Juliet’s age to the hour . Juliet was going to be fourteen at the end of July , in about two weeks . Then she told a long , funny story from Juliet’s childhood , and she laughed at it until tears ran down her face .
