“ Enough , Nurse , please be quiet , ” said Lady Capulet . Then she turned to her daughter . “ Tell me , Juliet , do you ever think about marriage ? When I was your age , I already had you . So , in short , the brave young Paris wants to marry you . ” “ Such a man , young lady ! ” cried the Nurse . “ He’s as perfect as a picture ! ” “ You will see him tonight at our feast , ” said Lady Capulet . “ Look at his face carefully , and tell me , can you like him ? ” “ I’ll look at him and try to like him , ” said Juliet politely . “ But I won’t go further than you allow me . ” Then a servant ran in to say that the guests were arriving . III . The Feast That night a group of young men walked through the dark streets towards the Capulet house . They were carrying torches , and they were wearing masks . In those days young people often went to parties in masks , and nobody asked their names . Romeo and Benvolio were in the group . So was Mercutio , Romeo’s best friend . He was a relative of the Prince , so he was neither a Capulet nor a Montague . He was clever and funny , and he loved to talk . Romeo was still in a gloomy mood , so Mercutio told a wild story about Queen Mab , the tiny fairy who brought people their dreams . He talked faster and faster , until Romeo asked him to be quiet . When they reached the house , Romeo waited at the door . “ I have a strange feeling , ” he said quietly . “ Something terrible is going to begin tonight , and it will end with my own early death . But God is steering my ship . Let’s go in . ” The great hall was full of music and light . Old Capulet welcomed the young men in masks warmly and invited them to dance . Romeo stood at the side of the room . Suddenly he saw a young lady among the dancers , and he could not take his eyes off her . “ She teaches the torches to burn brightly , ” he said softly . “ She looks like a jewel in the ear of the night . Did my heart ever love before now ? No ! I never saw true beauty until tonight . ” Near him , Tybalt heard his voice . “ That is a Montague ! ” he said angrily . “ Boy , bring me my sword ! How dare he come here in a mask and laugh at us ? ” “ What’s the matter , nephew ? ” asked Capulet . “ Uncle , that man is Romeo , our enemy . ” “ Leave him alone , ” said Capulet . “ He behaves like a real gentleman , and people say that he is an honest young man . I won’t let anyone hurt him in my house . ” Tybalt argued , but Capulet shouted at him . “ Who is the master here , you or me ? Be quiet ! ” Tybalt was shaking with anger , but he had to obey . As he left the room , he promised himself that Romeo was going to pay for this visit .
