Meanwhile Romeo went across the room to the young lady and took her hand . They talked quietly . Their words were half a game and half a prayer . Romeo called himself a pilgrim , a traveller who visits a holy place , and he called her a saint . A pilgrim prays to a saint , he said , and a good saint answers prayers . So he asked her for a kiss . She smiled , and she did not move away . Romeo kissed her , and then he kissed her again . Just then the Nurse came up and told the young lady that her mother wanted her . When she left , Romeo turned to the Nurse . “ Who is her mother ? ” he asked . “ Why , young man , her mother is the lady of this house , ” said the Nurse . “ And the man who marries her daughter will be very rich . ” Romeo felt cold . She was a Capulet ! Now his life was in the hands of his enemy . As the guests began to leave , the young lady spoke to her Nurse . “ Nurse , who is that gentleman at the door ? Go and ask his name . If he is married , I think I will die unmarried . ” The Nurse came back with the answer . “ His name is Romeo , and he is a Montague , the only son of your great enemy . ” The young lady went pale . Her name was Juliet . “ My only love has come from my only hate ! ” she whispered . “ I saw him too early , before I knew his name , and I learnt his name too late . ” IV . The Balcony Romeo did not go home with his friends . He could not leave the place where Juliet was . In the dark street he climbed over a high wall and jumped down into the Capulet garden . Outside the wall , Mercutio called Romeo’s name and made silly jokes about his love for Rosaline . Romeo did not answer , and at last his friends went home . Then a light appeared in a high window , and Romeo’s heart jumped . “ Look , what light is that in the window ? ” he whispered . “ Juliet is my sun , and her window is the east , where the sun rises ! ” Juliet came out onto her balcony . She did not know that anyone was in the garden below . She leant her cheek on her hand , and Romeo wished that he was a glove on that hand . Juliet sighed , and then she spoke to the night . “ O Romeo , Romeo , wherefore art thou Romeo ? ” In Shakespeare’s English , “ wherefore ” means “ why ” . Juliet was not asking where Romeo was . She was asking why he had to be Romeo , a Montague , the son of her family’s enemy . “ Say no to your father and refuse your name , ” she went on . “ Or if you won’t do that , only promise that you love me . Then I won’t be a Capulet any more . It’s only your name that is my enemy . What’s in a name ? A rose would smell just as sweet with any other name . And Romeo would still be perfect with another name . Romeo , throw away your name , and take all of me instead . ” Romeo could not stay silent any longer . “ I take you at your word ! ” he called . “ Call me your love , and I will have a new name . From now on I will never be Romeo . ”
