V . Friar Lawrence Friar Lawrence was a kind and wise old priest . He lived in a cell , which is a small , simple room for a monk or a friar . Early every morning he walked outside with a basket and collected plants and flowers . He knew all their secret powers . Some of them were medicines , and some were poisons . He was surprised to see Romeo so early . “ Young man , you haven’t been to bed at all , ” he said . “ Were you with Rosaline ? ” “ With Rosaline ? No , Father . I have forgotten that name , and all the pain that it brought me , ” said Romeo . “ I love the beautiful daughter of old Capulet , and she loves me too . We have promised ourselves to each other . Now we need you to marry us , and please , marry us today ! ” “ Holy Saint Francis ! ” cried the Friar . “ What a change ! Have you forgotten Rosaline so quickly ? Your tears for her are still on your cheeks ! Young men don’t love with their hearts , then , but with their eyes . ” “ But the girl I love now loves me back , ” said Romeo . “ The other one didn’t . ” The Friar thought for a moment . Then he smiled . “ Well , come with me , young man . I’ll help you , for one reason . Perhaps this marriage will turn the hate between your families into love . ” “ Oh , let’s go at once ! I’m in a great hurry . ” “ Wisely and slowly , ” said the Friar . “ People who run too fast often fall . ” Later that morning Mercutio and Benvolio were looking for Romeo in the town . They had bad news for him . Tybalt had sent a letter to the house of Romeo’s father , and it was surely a challenge to a fight . When Romeo arrived at last , he was in a wonderful mood , full of jokes , and Mercutio was delighted . “ Now you are our old Romeo again ! ” he said . “ Isn’t this better than crying for love ? ” Then a large woman came down the street with a servant called Peter . It was Juliet’s Nurse , with a big fan in her hand . Mercutio laughed at her and made rude jokes , until at last he and Benvolio left . The Nurse was very cross . “ Who was that rude young man ? ” she said . “ Now , sir , my young lady asked me to find you . But first let me tell you something . If you are only playing a game with her , that is very wrong of you , because she is very young . ” “ Nurse , give my love to your lady , ” said Romeo . “ Tell her to find a way to go to confession at Friar Lawrence’s cell this afternoon . There she will confess , and there we will be married . And good Nurse , wait behind the abbey wall . Within the hour my servant will bring you a rope ladder . Tonight I will climb up it to Juliet’s room . ” “ God bless you , sir , ” said the Nurse . “ Oh , she is the sweetest girl ! But there is a nobleman in town called Paris , and he wants to marry her . She would rather look at a toad than at him ! ” She laughed , and went off happily to take the news home .
