VI . The Secret Wedding In the Capulet garden , Juliet was waiting for the Nurse . She walked up and down , up and down . “ The clock struck nine when I sent the Nurse , ” she said . “ She promised to come back in half an hour . Now it’s twelve , and she still isn’t here . Old people are so slow ! ” At last the Nurse came in and sat down heavily . “ Oh , sweet Nurse , what news ? ” cried Juliet . “ Did you meet him ? ” “ I’m tired , leave me alone for a while , ” said the Nurse . “ Oh , how my bones ache ! What a journey I’ve had ! ” “ Please , good Nurse , speak ! Is your news good or bad ? Just answer that . ” But the Nurse was enjoying herself . First she talked about Romeo’s handsome face and legs . Then she asked Juliet about lunch . Then she complained about her head and her back . Then she asked where Juliet’s mother was . Juliet nearly cried with impatience . At last the Nurse smiled . “ Can you go to confession today ? ” “ Yes , I can . ” “ Then hurry to Friar Lawrence’s cell . A husband is waiting there to make you a wife . Look , now the red is coming into your cheeks ! I must go another way , to get a ladder for your love . He will climb it to your room tonight , like a bird to its nest . ” “ Thank you , dear Nurse ! ” said Juliet , and she ran . In his cell , Friar Lawrence was waiting with Romeo . The Friar prayed that no sorrow would come after this wedding . “ Amen , ” said Romeo . “ But let sorrow come if it wants . After you join our hands , death can do what it likes . It’s enough that I can call her mine . ” The Friar shook his head . “ Such violent joys have violent ends , ” he said . “ They burn out like fire and gunpowder when they meet . Honey is sweet , but too much of it makes you sick . So love gently . That is how love lasts a long time . ” Then Juliet came in , and Romeo’s face lit up . He took her hands and asked her to describe her joy . “ My love has grown so rich , ” said Juliet , “ that I can’t count even half of it . ” “ Come with me , both of you , ” said the Friar with a smile . “ We’ll be quick . I won’t leave you two alone until the Church has made you one . ” So , in the Friar’s little cell , Romeo and Juliet were married in secret . Only the Nurse knew their secret . VII . Mercutio and Tybalt It was a hot afternoon . Mercutio and Benvolio were walking through a public square with some of their friends . “ Please , Mercutio , let’s go home , ” said Benvolio . “ It’s hot today , and the Capulets are out . If we meet them , there will be a fight . ” Mercutio only laughed . Just then Tybalt came up with some of his friends . He was looking for Romeo . “ Mercutio , ” he said , “ you are always in tune with Romeo . ” “ In tune ? Do you think we are musicians ? ” said Mercutio , and he touched his sword . “ Here is my violin bow . It will make you dance ! ” At that moment Romeo came into the square . He had just left his wedding , and his heart was full of love and peace . “ Here comes my man , ” said Tybalt , and he turned to Romeo . “ Romeo , I hate you , and there is only one word for you . You are a villain . ”
