VIII . Banished Juliet knew nothing of all this . She was in her room , waiting impatiently for the night and for Romeo . Then the Nurse came in with the rope ladder , and her face was full of pain . “ He’s dead , he’s dead ! ” cried the Nurse . “ He’s gone , he’s killed , he’s dead ! ” Juliet went white . “ Is Romeo dead ? ” “ Oh , Tybalt , Tybalt , the best friend I had ! ” cried the Nurse . “ Kind , honest Tybalt ! Why did I live to see you dead ? ” “ What are you saying ? Is Romeo killed , and is Tybalt dead too ? ” At last the Nurse explained . “ Tybalt is dead , and Romeo is banished . Romeo killed him , and now he is banished . ” To be banished means to be sent away from your city or country as a punishment . You are not allowed to come back . For a moment Juliet was angry with Romeo . How could he kill her cousin ? But then the Nurse said , “ Shame on Romeo ! ” At once Juliet stopped her . “ Don’t you dare say that ! ” she cried . “ He is my husband . Tybalt wanted to kill my husband , and my husband killed Tybalt . Why am I crying , then ? Because of one word , which is worse than Tybalt’s death . That word is ‘ banished ’ . Oh , these poor ropes ! He was going to use them to climb up to me . Now I will die a wife who never had a wedding night . ” “ Stay here and rest , ” said the Nurse gently . “ I’ll find Romeo and bring him to you tonight . He’s hiding in Friar Lawrence’s cell . ” “ Oh , find him ! ” said Juliet . She took a ring from her finger . “ Give this to my true love , and tell him to come and say his last goodbye . ” At the Friar’s cell , Romeo was waiting for news . When the Friar told him about his punishment , Romeo fell into despair . “ Banished ? ” he cried . “ Be kind , and say ‘ death ’ . Being banished is much worse than death . Heaven is here , where Juliet lives . Every cat and dog and little mouse can live here and look at her , but I can’t . ” “ You foolish madman , listen to me for a moment , ” said the Friar . “ You are old , and you don’t know how I feel , ” said Romeo , and he threw himself down on the floor and cried . There was a knock at the door . It was the Nurse . She told Romeo that Juliet was lying on her bed and crying . Again and again Juliet called out “ Tybalt ” , and then “ Romeo ” . “ My name kills her , as my hand killed her cousin , ” cried Romeo . “ Tell me , Friar , where in my body is my name ? Tell me , so I can cut it out ! ” And he pulled out his sword to kill himself .
