“ Stop your desperate hand ! ” cried the Friar . “ Are you a man ? You killed Tybalt . Will you kill yourself too , and so kill your lady , who lives in you ? Think , man ! Your Juliet is alive , and so are you . The law wanted your death , but the Prince only sent you away . You have so many blessings , and you are sulking like a spoilt child . ” Then the Friar explained his plan . “ Go to your wife tonight , as you arranged , and comfort her . But leave early in the morning , in disguise . Then go to Mantua and live there . I’ll wait for the right moment to tell everyone about your marriage . I’ll make peace between your families , and I’ll ask the Prince to pardon you . Then I’ll call you back , and your joy will be twenty times greater than your sorrow is now . ” The Nurse gave Romeo Juliet’s ring and hurried away to tell her lady that Romeo was coming . Romeo felt much better now . “ Go , ” said the Friar . “ Stay in Mantua . I’ll find your servant , and he will bring you news from me . Give me your hand . It’s late . Goodbye , and good night . ” IX . The Lark Late that night , downstairs in the Capulet house , old Lord Capulet was talking to Count Paris . When Paris got up to leave , Capulet suddenly had an idea . “ Sir Paris , I think my daughter will do what I tell her , ” he said . “ She will marry you on Wednesday . But wait , what day is it today ? ” “ Monday , my lord . ” “ Monday ! Then Wednesday is too soon . Let it be Thursday . On Thursday she will marry this noble count . We won’t have a big party , because Tybalt died so recently . What do you say to Thursday , Paris ? ” “ My lord , I wish Thursday was tomorrow , ” said Paris . Upstairs , in Juliet’s room , Romeo and Juliet were together for their first and only night as husband and wife . When the first light of morning came , Romeo got up to go . “ Are you going already ? ” said Juliet . “ It isn’t day yet . It was the nightingale that you heard , not the lark . It sings every night in that tree over there . Believe me , love , it was the nightingale . ” The nightingale is a small bird that sings at night . The lark sings early in the morning , when the sun comes up . “ It was the lark , ” said Romeo . “ Look , love , at those bright lines in the clouds in the east . The stars have gone out . I must go and live , or stay and die . ” “ That light isn’t daylight , ” said Juliet . “ Stay a little longer . ” “ Then let them catch me and kill me , ” said Romeo . “ I’ll stay , if that is what you want . ” Now Juliet was afraid for him . “ No , it is day , it is ! Go , run ! It is the lark that sings so out of tune . Oh , go now . It’s getting lighter and lighter . ” The Nurse hurried in . “ Madam , your mother is coming to your room ! It’s day . Be careful ! ” Romeo kissed Juliet once more and climbed down the rope ladder into the garden . “ Do you think we’ll ever meet again ? ” Juliet called down to him .
