We went back the next afternoon , when the Un - Dead are weak . Van Helsing brought a wooden stake and a hammer . “ This is the only way , ” he told Arthur . “ It is terrible , but it will set her free . The man who loved her most must do it . ” Arthur was very pale , but his hands did not shake . He did the terrible thing that Van Helsing asked , while we read prayers for her . When it was over , Lucy’s face was calm and sweet again . It was the face of the Lucy we knew and loved . “ Now , my child , you may kiss her , ” said Van Helsing gently , and Arthur kissed her goodbye . Outside , Van Helsing turned to us . “ One part of our work is done . Now we must find the one who did this . He is very old and very strong , and he is somewhere in London . Will you help me ? ” We all took his hand , one by one , and we promised . X . Mina’s Diary : The Hunters Jonathan and I came back to England in September . Soon after , dear old Mr Hawkins died and left us his house and his business . Jonathan was getting stronger every day . Then one day we were walking along Piccadilly , in the centre of London . Suddenly Jonathan held my arm so hard that it hurt . His face was white . He was looking at a tall , thin man with a black moustache and a pointed beard . The man had a hard face and very red lips , and he was looking at a pretty girl in a carriage . “ It’s him ! ” whispered Jonathan . “ The Count ! But he’s grown young ! ” That night Jonathan was ill again , and I was very afraid . So I opened his diary and read it . It was a terrible story . I typed it all out on my typewriter , a machine for writing . Then I got a letter from Professor Van Helsing . He was reading Lucy’s papers and found my old letters to her , and he wanted to meet me . When he came , I told him everything and gave him my copy of Jonathan’s diary . He read it that night . The next morning he came back with shining eyes . “ Madam Mina , your husband’s story is true , every word of it , ” he said . “ He is a brave man . He was not mad . ” Those words made Jonathan well again . It was not fear that made him ill , he said , but doubt . Now he knew that he was not mad , and he was ready to fight . We went to Dr Seward’s hospital at Purfleet . I collected all our diaries and letters and the stories from the newspapers . Dr Seward spoke his diary into a phonograph , a machine that kept his voice on wax . I listened to it , and I cried about poor Lucy . Then I typed it too . I put everything in order by date , so that we could all read the whole story . And then we saw it . The Count’s house , Carfax , was right next door to Dr Seward’s hospital . That evening we all sat round a table : Van Helsing , Dr Seward , Arthur , Quincey , Jonathan and I . Van Helsing told us everything he knew about vampires .
