Then he can never rest in it again . ” While he was speaking , Quincey saw a big bat at the window . He ran outside and fired his gun at it , but it flew away . After that evening the men decided that I must not help any more . “ This work is too dangerous for a woman , ” Jonathan said . “ We want you to stay safe . ” I agreed , because I did not want them to worry . But it hurt me a little . That night they went to Carfax . Later I learned that they found the boxes in the old chapel , but there were only twenty - nine of them . The others were somewhere else . I could not sleep . I heard dogs howling and the patients shouting . Then a thin white mist came in under the door . It grew thicker and thicker . In the middle of it I saw two red eyes , like the eyes on the cliff at Whitby . After that I remember nothing . In the morning I was pale and tired . But I said nothing to the men , because I did not want to make them anxious . XI . Dr Seward’s Diary : Renfield’s Story On the evening when we first went to Carfax , Renfield asked me to let him go home that very night . He spoke calmly and politely , like a gentleman , and for a moment I almost believed that he was well . But I said no . “ Then remember later , ” he said , “ that I tried to tell you . ” On the night of the third of October one of the attendants ran to my room . Renfield was lying on the floor of his room . His face was badly hurt , and his back was broken . Van Helsing came at once , and the others too . We knew that he did not have long to live , and we asked him to tell us everything . “ He came to my window in a mist , ” said Renfield weakly . “ He promised me rats , thousands and thousands of rats , and life for many years . ‘ All these lives I will give you , ’ he said , ‘ if you obey me . ’ So I said , ‘ Come in , Lord and Master ! ’ And he came in . ” That was it . That was how the Count got into my house . Somebody inside invited him .
