XII . Jonathan’s Diary : The Chase After that terrible night , we worked without rest . We put holy bread into every box at Carfax . Then we found the Count’s house in Piccadilly . There were more boxes there , and we found others in two other parts of London . We made them all useless . In the end , only one box was missing . We waited for the Count in the house in Piccadilly . In the afternoon we heard a key in the door , and he came in fast and quiet , like a big cat . I jumped at him with my long Indian knife . He moved back quickly , and my knife only cut his coat . Banknotes and gold coins fell out onto the floor . We held up our crosses , and he stepped back . Then he picked up a handful of money , jumped through the window and landed in the yard below . He turned and looked up at us . “ You think you can stop me , ” he cried . “ Look at you , standing there with your pale faces ! You will all be sorry . I have hundreds of years in front of me , and my revenge is only beginning . The women you love are already mine . ” Then he was gone . He was running away . But where ? Mina had an idea . She asked Van Helsing to hypnotise her , to put her into a kind of deep sleep . Because of the Count’s blood , she was connected to him . At sunrise and at sunset her mind could see and hear what he saw and heard . Van Helsing tried it at sunrise . “ It’s dark , ” Mina said in a slow voice . “ I hear water . Little waves . Men are running and shouting . Chains . The ship is moving . ” We found the answer at the port . A ship called the Czarina Catherine left London that day for Varna , on the Black Sea . It carried one big box . The Count was going home . That evening Mina asked us for something terrible . “ If I change , ” she said , “ if I become like Lucy , you must kill me . Promise me . ” I did not want to promise , but we all did . We travelled by train across Europe and waited for the ship at Varna . But the Count was clever . Through Mina’s mind , he knew our plans . The ship went to another port , called Galatz , and the box was already gone when we arrived . After that , Mina asked us not to tell her our plans any more . Mina studied the maps . “ He will go by river , ” she said . “ It’s the safest and most secret way for him . He’ll go up the River Sereth and then the Bistritza , towards the Borgo Pass . ” She was right . We were all proud of her . We made a plan . Arthur and I went up the river in a small steamboat . Dr Seward and Quincey rode along the river bank on horses . Van Helsing took Mina by train and carriage to the Borgo Pass , towards the castle . I did not want to leave her , but Van Helsing had holy bread with him , and she was safer with him than with anyone . Day after day our boat went up the river . It was very cold , and the first snow was falling . Somewhere in front of us , a box of earth was moving towards the mountains .
