XIII . Mina’s Diary : Sunset Van Helsing and I drove through the snow towards the Borgo Pass . These mountains were new to me , but somehow I knew the way . I slept most of the day , and I did not want to eat . Van Helsing watched me with sad , worried eyes . On the first night near the castle , he drew a circle on the ground round me and put small pieces of holy bread along it . Then he made a fire . In the middle of the night the snow began to move in the firelight . Out of the snow came three women . Two were dark , and one had golden hair . They were the women from Jonathan’s diary . “ Come , sister , ” they called to me in sweet voices . “ Come to us . Come ! ” I was afraid , but I did not want to go to them . And they could not come into the circle . They stayed outside it until the sun came up . Then they disappeared . Our poor horses died of fear that night . In the morning Van Helsing went up to the castle alone . He came back in the afternoon . He looked old and very tired . “ They are at peace now , Madam Mina , ” he said . “ All three of them . And in the chapel I made his own grave useless . He can never rest there again . ” On the sixth of November we walked east towards the road . From a high rock , through Van Helsing’s field glasses , I saw a cart . A group of Szgany rode round it , and on the cart there was a big box . They were racing towards the castle . The sun was getting low in the sky . The Count only had to wait until sunset . Then he could leave his box with all his power . Then I saw men on horses coming from the south . It was Quincey and Dr Seward . And from the north came two more riders , Jonathan and Arthur ! The wolves were howling in the hills . “ Stop ! ” cried our men . The Szgany had knives , and our men had guns . Jonathan and Quincey pushed through the Szgany towards the cart . Jonathan jumped up onto it and threw the box down onto the snow . I saw a knife flash , and Quincey held his side . There was blood on his hand , but he did not stop . Together they opened the box . The Count lay inside . His face was as white as wax , and his red eyes looked up at the setting sun . I saw hate in them , and then a look of triumph . In a few minutes , the sun was going to go down . But at that moment Jonathan’s great knife flashed . At the same time Quincey pushed his knife into the Count’s heart . It was like a miracle . In front of our eyes , the Count’s whole body turned to dust and disappeared . And for one moment , just before the end , I saw a look of peace on his face . I will be glad of that all my life . The Szgany turned their horses and rode away . The sun went down behind the mountains , and the castle stood black against the red sky . Quincey was lying on the snow . He was badly hurt . Jonathan and I knelt beside him , and he took my hand . He looked at my face , and he smiled . “ Thank God it was not for nothing ! ” he said . “ Look ! The snow is not whiter than her forehead ! ” The red mark was gone . We all fell on our knees . Quincey smiled at us once more , and then he died , a brave gentleman to the end .
