The coach was full . When the other passengers heard where I was going , they looked at me with pity . They whispered some words that I found in my dictionary later . One meant “ devil ” , another meant “ wolf ” , and another meant “ vampire ” . In the old stories of that country , a vampire was a dead person who did not rest in the grave . He got up at night and drank the blood of living people . Before I got out , the passengers gave me little presents : garlic , wild roses and a branch of a mountain tree . Many of them pointed two fingers at me . It was an old sign to keep away the evil eye . Night came , and it grew cold . We reached the Borgo Pass an hour early , and there was no carriage . The coach driver seemed glad . “ The Count’s carriage isn’t here , ” he said . “ Come with us to the next village , sir , and come back tomorrow . ” But at that moment a carriage with four black horses came out of the dark . The driver was a tall man with a long brown beard and a great black hat . His eyes looked red in the light of the lamps . “ You are early tonight , my friend , ” he said to the coach driver . Then he took my arm in a hand of steel and lifted me into the carriage like a child . We drove fast along the dark mountain road . Dogs began to howl at the farms , and then I heard wolves . The horses shook with fear . Twice I saw a strange little blue flame in the forest . Each time the driver stopped , got down and put some stones round the place . Then the moon came out , and I saw a circle of grey wolves all round us . Their white teeth shone , and their red tongues hung out . I shouted and beat on the side of the carriage . Then the driver appeared in the road . He lifted his long arms and spoke to the wolves in a hard voice , and they moved back into the trees . At last we drove into the courtyard of a huge , dark castle . There was no light in any of its high black windows . II . Jonathan’s Diary : The Castle The driver put my bags down at a great old door and disappeared into the dark . I waited a long time . I felt very small and very far from home . Then I heard heavy steps , the sound of chains and the noise of old locks . The door opened . A tall old man stood there with a lamp in his hand . He was dressed in black from head to foot , and he had a long white moustache . “ Welcome to my house ! ” he said in excellent English . “ Enter freely and of your own will ! ” He did not move until I stepped over the doorway . Then he came forward and shook my hand . His hand was as cold as ice , and very strong . “ Count Dracula ? ” I asked .
