“ He is young and strong , ” said the other . “ There are enough kisses for all of us . ” The fair woman came to me and bent over me . I felt her breath on my neck . I closed my eyes and waited , and my heart beat fast . Suddenly the Count was in the room , like a storm . His eyes were red with anger . He took the fair woman by the neck and threw her back across the room . “ How dare you touch him ? ” he cried . “ He is mine ! Go back , all of you ! You can have him later , when I have finished with him . ” “ Are we going to have nothing tonight ? ” asked the fair woman with a cruel laugh . The Count threw a bag on the floor . Something moved inside it , and I heard a weak cry , like the cry of a small child . The women went to the bag . At that moment my fear was too great , and I fainted . When I woke up , I was in my own bed . I did not know how I got there . IV . Jonathan’s Diary : The Boxes of Earth A few days later a group of Szgany came to the castle . They were a travelling people who lived in the mountains and worked for the Count . I wrote two letters , one to Mr Hawkins and one to Mina in shorthand . I threw them out of my window to one of the men , with a gold coin for him . The man put them in his coat and smiled . That evening the Count came into the library with my two letters in his hand . His voice was calm . “ The letter to Mr Hawkins I will send , of course , ” he said . “ But this other one is an evil thing . I cannot read it . ” And he burned Mina’s letter in the lamp . Later I found that my travelling clothes and my papers were gone too . I had to escape . I remembered how the Count climbed down the wall . If he could do it , I could too . So one day , in the bright sunshine , I climbed out of my window . I moved along the old stones very slowly , with my hands and my toes . I did not look down . At last I reached the Count’s window and climbed in . The room was empty and dusty . In one corner there was a big pile of gold coins from many countries , some of them hundreds of years old . A dark stone stair went down from the room . At the bottom was an old ruined chapel . It smelt of fresh earth . There , on the floor , stood fifty great wooden boxes . They were full of earth . In one of them lay the Count . His eyes were open and as hard as stone . He did not breathe , and I could not feel a heart beating . But his face did not look dead . I ran back up the stairs , climbed out of the window and returned to my room . I was shaking all over . On the twenty - ninth of June , the date of my last letter , the Count said , “ Tomorrow , my friend , you will leave . My carriage will take you to the Borgo Pass . ”
