“ Why not tonight ? ” I asked . “ I can walk . ” The Count smiled . “ Of course . Come . ” He opened the great front door . At once I heard the howling of wolves . They were waiting outside , with their red mouths open . The Count stood beside the door and smiled his cruel smile . Then I understood . This was how he wanted me to die . “ Shut the door ! ” I cried . “ I’ll wait till the morning ! ” Later that night I heard his voice outside my room . “ Go back to your place ! It is not your time yet . Wait ! Tomorrow night he is yours . ” And I heard soft , sweet laughter . In the morning I went along the wall to the Count’s room again . I wanted to find the key of the castle door . The Count lay in his box as before . But now he looked younger . His white hair was dark grey , his face was fuller , and there was fresh blood on his red lips . He looked like a horrible fat animal after a big meal . I thought of London , with its millions of people . This monster was going to live among them . I took a shovel and hit at his face with all my strength . But his eyes turned and looked at me , and the shovel turned in my hand . It only cut his forehead . Then the lid fell back over the box , and I heard the Szgany singing in the courtyard . I ran back to my room . All morning I heard the sound of hammers . The men were nailing the boxes shut . Then the heavy carts drove away down the mountain road . Now I was alone in the castle with those three terrible women . I decided to climb down the castle wall , much further down than before . Perhaps I would fall and die . But I was not going to stay here and wait for the night . “ Goodbye , Mina , ” I wrote . “ Goodbye , all of you at home . ” V . Lucy was pretty and rich and full of fun , and everybody loved her . “ Oh , Mina , ” she wrote , “ three men asked me to marry them , all on the same day ! Why can’t a girl marry three men ? ” The first was Dr John Seward . He was a young doctor , and he was the head of a big hospital for mad people near London . The second was Quincey Morris , a brave , funny American from Texas . And the third was Arthur Holmwood , the man she loved . She said yes to Arthur , of course . She felt sorry for the other two , but they took the news like gentlemen , and all three men stayed good friends with her .
