VI . Mina’s Diary : The Night on the Cliff One night soon after , I forgot to lock our door . I woke up suddenly , and Lucy’s bed was empty . The door was open . I put on a big shawl and ran out into the streets . The moon was bright , and I ran up the long steps to the church on the cliff . From the top of the steps I could see our seat . Somebody in white was lying on it , and something dark was bending over her . It was long and black . I could not tell if it was a man or an animal . “ Lucy ! Lucy ! ” I cried . The dark thing lifted its head , and I saw a white face and red , shining eyes . When I reached the seat , the dark thing was gone . Lucy was alone and asleep . She was breathing hard , and her hand was at her throat . I put my shawl round her and closed it at her neck with a big pin . Then I woke her gently and took her home . In the morning I saw two little red marks on Lucy’s throat , like two small holes . “ Oh dear , ” I thought , “ I did that with my pin . ” But the marks did not get better . Lucy was pale and tired all the time , although she slept a lot . One night I found her at the open window , fast asleep . A big bat was flying round and round outside , very close to her . Later Lucy told me about the night on the cliff . “ I thought it was a dream , ” she said . “ I remember a dog howling . Then there was something long and dark , with red eyes . And then I felt as if I was floating up out of my body . ” Then , at last , a letter came about Jonathan . It was from Sister Agatha , a nun who worked in a hospital in Budapest . Jonathan was there , and he was very ill with a terrible fever of the brain . People found him on a train , and nobody knew his name at first . He had been there for nearly six weeks . “ In his fever , ” she wrote , “ he talks about terrible things : wolves and blood , ghosts and devils . ” Lucy was a little better then , and her mother was with her . So I left Whitby at once and travelled to Budapest . My poor Jonathan was so thin and pale ! He was weak , and he did not remember much . He took my hand , and then he gave me his diary . “ Mina , ” he said , “ I had a great shock . I don’t know if it was real or if I was mad . The answer is in this book , and I don’t want to know it . Keep it . Read it if you must , but never tell me what is in it . ” That afternoon , Jonathan and I were married in the hospital , with the kind sisters round us . It was not the wedding of my dreams , but I was very happy . Afterwards I wrapped his book in white paper and closed it with wax . I pressed my new wedding ring into the wax .
