VII . Dr Seward’s Diary : Renfield and Lucy I am John Seward , and I am a doctor . I run a large hospital for mad people at Purfleet , near London . When Lucy said no to me , I felt empty . So I worked harder than ever . My most interesting patient was a man called Renfield . He was fifty - nine years old and very strong . Sometimes he was quiet and polite , and sometimes he was wild and dangerous . He had a strange hobby . First he caught flies and kept them in a box . Then he fed the flies to spiders . Then he fed the spiders to sparrows . And then , I am sorry to say , he ate the sparrows himself . One day he asked me for a kitten . I said no , and he was very angry . Slowly I understood his idea . Renfield believed that he could take the life of living things into himself . The more lives he ate , the more life he got . Then , one night , Renfield escaped . We found him in the grounds of the old empty house next to my hospital . The house was called Carfax . He was standing at the door of its old chapel , and he was talking to somebody inside . “ I am here , Master , ” he said . “ I am your servant . I will obey you ! ” We carried him back to his room . For days after that he said again and again , “ The Master is coming . The Master is near . ” At the beginning of September I got a letter from Arthur . “ Lucy is ill , ” he wrote . “ She is back in London , and she’s getting worse . Please come and see her . ” I went to her house at once . Lucy was very pale , but I could not find any disease . So I wrote to my old teacher , Professor Abraham Van Helsing of Amsterdam . He knew more about strange illnesses than any man in the world . Van Helsing came at once . He was an older man with a strong , clever face and kind eyes . He looked at Lucy for a long time , and he looked carefully at her throat . Then he went away for a few days . He did not tell me what he thought . When he came back , Lucy was much worse . She was as white as paper , and she could hardly breathe . “ She needs blood , ” said Van Helsing . “ At once ! ” We did a transfusion : we took blood from a strong young man and put it into her body . Arthur was there , and he gave his blood gladly . After that , Lucy’s cheeks were pink again . But the next morning she was pale again . It happened again and again . I gave her my blood , and then Van Helsing gave his . Every time she was better for a day , and then she was worse . And every time there were those two small marks on her throat . One day Van Helsing brought a big box of white garlic flowers from Holland . He put them all round Lucy’s window and door . He made a necklace of them and put it round her neck . “ Do not take them away , ” he told Lucy and her mother . “ Do not open the window tonight . ” The next morning we found the flowers on the floor and the window open . Lucy’s mother did it . The smell was too strong , she said , and Lucy needed fresh air . Lucy was nearly dead . For the first time I saw Van Helsing put his face in his hands . “ The poor mother wanted only to help , ” he said . “ Why is everything against us ? ” Then he stood up . “ Come , ” he said . “ We must fight . ”
