VIII . Dr Seward’s Diary : Lucy’s Last Night A few nights later Van Helsing and I were both away from Lucy’s house . We learned later what happened that night from a note in Lucy’s own hand . Lucy’s mother was frightened and came to sleep with her . In the night they heard a howl , and something beat at the window . Then the glass broke , and the head of a great grey wolf came through the window . Lucy’s mother cried out . She reached for the garlic flowers round Lucy’s neck and pulled them away . Then she fell back . Her weak heart stopped , and she died . The servants came in and saw it all . They took some wine to calm themselves , but somebody put a sleeping drug in it , and they all fell asleep . Lucy was alone . Small specks of dust danced in the air of the room . When we arrived in the morning , nobody opened the door . We broke in through the kitchen window . The servants were asleep on the floor . Lucy’s mother lay dead on the bed , and Lucy was nearly gone . Quincey Morris arrived just in time , and this time he gave his blood . Later we read in the newspaper that a big grey wolf escaped from London Zoo that night . It came back the next morning with cuts on its head from broken glass . We could not save Lucy . Arthur came to sit with her at the end . Lucy slept , and while she slept , she changed . Her teeth looked longer and sharper , and her face looked hard . The marks on her throat were gone . Suddenly she opened her eyes and spoke in a soft , strange voice . “ Arthur ! My love , you are here at last ! Kiss me ! ” Arthur bent towards her . But Van Helsing jumped forward , took him by the neck and pulled him back across the room . “ No ! ” he cried . “ Not for your life , and not for your soul , or hers ! ” For a moment there was anger in Lucy’s face , and her teeth closed with a click . Then her eyes became soft and clear again . She was our Lucy . She took Van Helsing’s old hand and kissed it . “ You are my true friend , ” she said weakly , “ and his friend too . Oh , keep him safe , and give me peace ! ” “ I promise , ” said Van Helsing , and he went down on his knees . Arthur kissed her forehead gently . Lucy closed her eyes , and a few minutes later she died . “ It’s the end , ” I said quietly . “ No , ” said Van Helsing . “ I am sorry , my friend . It is only the beginning . ” After her death Lucy looked beautiful again , like a girl asleep . Van Helsing put garlic flowers round her in the coffin and a little gold cross on her lips . During the night one of the maids stole the cross .
