IX . Dr Seward’s Diary : The Bloofer Lady A few days after Lucy’s funeral , Van Helsing showed me a newspaper . In Hampstead , near the churchyard where Lucy lay , small children were going missing in the evenings . People found them the next morning . They were weak and pale , and each child had two small wounds on the throat . The children all said the same thing . They went with “ the bloofer lady ” . That was how the little ones said “ beautiful lady ” . “ What made these wounds , friend John ? ” asked Van Helsing . “ Some animal , perhaps , ” I said . “ A bat ? ” “ No , ” he said . “ Miss Lucy made them . ” I was angry , and I told him so . But he only said , “ Come with me tonight . ” We went to Lucy’s family tomb in the churchyard . Van Helsing opened the door with a key , and then he opened Lucy’s coffin . It was empty . Later , outside among the trees , we saw a white figure go past us in the dark . We found a small child on the grass , frightened but alive , and we left him in a place where a policeman soon found him . The next day we went to the tomb again . This time Lucy was in her coffin , and she was more beautiful than ever . Her cheeks were pink , and her lips were red . Her teeth were long and sharp . “ Are you sure now , friend John ? ” asked Van Helsing sadly . “ She is one of the Un - Dead . She sleeps by day in her grave , and at night she goes out and drinks blood . We must give her peace . But Arthur must see it first . ” The next night four of us went to the tomb together : Van Helsing , Arthur , Quincey and I . Again the coffin was empty . Van Helsing filled the small cracks round the tomb door with a soft paste . He made it with holy bread from the church , and no evil thing could pass through it . Then we hid behind the trees and waited . Soon a white figure came through the churchyard . It was Lucy . She was holding a child in her arms . Her face was still beautiful , but her eyes were cruel , and there was blood on her lips . When she saw us , she made an angry sound like a cat and let the child fall onto the grass . Then she smiled at Arthur and held out her arms . “ Arthur , my love , come to me , ” she said in her sweetest voice . “ Leave these men . Come , and we will rest together . ” Arthur opened his arms and began to walk towards her . But Van Helsing jumped between them and held up his little golden cross . Lucy moved back with a look of terrible anger . She ran to the tomb , but she could not go in , because of the paste . Van Helsing took some of it away . At once Lucy passed through a crack as thin as a knife and disappeared inside . “ Now do you believe me , my friends ? ” said Van Helsing . Arthur could not speak . He only nodded .
