XI . Victor’s Story : The Island Every day I worked in my hut , and every day my work filled me with more disgust . In Ingolstadt my dream had made me blind . Now I saw clearly what I was doing . One evening I sat in my workroom . The moon was rising over the sea . I stopped and began to think . I was making another creature , and I did not know what she would be like . Perhaps she would be ten thousand times worse than him . She made no promises . Perhaps she would hate him and leave him . And what if they had children ? A race of devils could live on the earth and fill people with fear for ever . Did I have the right to do this to the whole world ? Then I looked up . At the window , in the moonlight , I saw the creature . He was smiling an ugly smile as he watched me work . I trembled with anger . I took the thing on the table , and I tore it to pieces . The creature saw it . He howled in despair and went away . Some hours later I heard a boat near the shore . Then my door opened , and he came in . “ You have destroyed the work you began , ” he said . “ Do you dare to break your promise ? I followed you across Europe . Do you dare to destroy my hopes ? ” “ Go away ! ” I said . “ Yes , I am breaking my promise . I will never make another like you . ” “ Slave ! ” he said . “ I spoke kindly to you before . But remember my power . You are my creator , but I am your master ; obey ! ” “ Your threats cannot move me . Go ! ” “ Every man has a wife , and every animal has a mate , ” he cried . “ Must I be alone ? You will be sorry for this . I am going now , but remember : I shall be with you on your wedding - night . ” I jumped towards him , but he ran out of the house . Soon I saw his boat moving fast over the water , and then it disappeared into the dark . I thought his words meant that he would kill me on my wedding night . I did not fear for myself . But when I thought of Elizabeth waiting for me , I cried for the first time in many months . The next day a letter came from Henry . He asked me to meet him in Perth . But first I had to get rid of my work . That night I put everything into a basket with heavy stones . At about two in the morning , I rowed out to sea in a small boat , and I threw the basket into the water . Then I lay down in the boat . The night was calm , and I fell asleep . When I woke up , the sun was high , and a strong wind had carried me far from land . For many hours I was lost at sea . In the evening I saw land and sailed into a little harbour . Some unfriendly people were waiting near the harbour . “ You must come to Mr Kirwin , sir , ” said one of the men . “ He is our judge . A gentleman was found dead here last night . ” I was in Ireland .
