The stranger became very excited , and he asked many questions about the way that the “ devil ” had gone . That was his word for him . Over the next days my guest grew stronger , and I began to love him like a brother . He is gentle and wise , but a deep sadness lives in his eyes . One evening I told him about my plans . I said that I was ready to give everything , even my life , for knowledge . His face grew dark again . “ Unhappy man ! ” he cried . “ Do you share my madness ? Listen to my story , and perhaps you will change your mind . ” He told me that his name was Victor Frankenstein , and the next day he began his story . Every evening I write down what he tells me , in his own words . Here it is , my dear sister . II . Victor’s Story : A Happy Childhood I was born in Geneva , in Switzerland . My father worked for the city all his life , and everybody trusted him . He loved my mother , Caroline , very much . I was their first child , and for many years I was their only one . When I was about five years old , we spent a week by the Lake of Como , in Italy . One day my mother visited a poor farmer’s cottage near the lake . Among the hungry little children there was one girl who looked different . She had hair like gold , clear blue eyes and a sweet , calm face . The farmer’s wife told my mother her story . The girl’s father was a nobleman from Milan , and her mother was dead . Her father had lost everything in a war and disappeared , so this poor family looked after her . My mother asked if she could take the little girl home . The farmer and his wife loved the child , but they were very poor , so they agreed . The girl’s name was Elizabeth Lavenza . When we came home , my mother said to me with a smile , “ Victor , I have a lovely present for you . You will get it tomorrow . ” The next day she brought Elizabeth to me . From that day Elizabeth was mine , to love and to protect . We called each other cousins , but she was much more than a cousin to me . Elizabeth and I grew up together . She loved poetry , the mountains and the lakes . I only wanted to know the secrets of the world . Why did things happen ? What were heaven and earth made of ? My best friend was Henry Clerval , the son of a Geneva merchant . Henry loved stories about heroes and brave knights , and he wanted to do great things for other people . Later my mother had two more sons , Ernest and little William . When I was thirteen , on a rainy day at an inn , I found an old book by Cornelius Agrippa , a writer who lived three hundred years before . He wrote about magic and about the secrets of nature . I was very excited and showed it to my father .
