VIII . The Creature’s Story : The Cottagers For many months I watched the family in the cottage . The old man was blind . The young people were his son and daughter , Felix and Agatha . Their family name was De Lacey . They were very poor . Often the young people gave all their food to their father and ate nothing themselves . At first I stole some of their vegetables at night . When I saw how hungry they were , I stopped . I lived on berries , nuts and roots from the forest instead . Felix spent hours every day cutting wood for the fire . So at night I took his tools and cut wood for them myself . In the morning they found a big pile of wood at their door , and they were very surprised . I heard them say the words “ good spirit ” and “ wonderful ” . The cottagers made sounds to each other , and I saw that these sounds carried their thoughts . I wanted to learn this magic . It was very difficult , but slowly I learned the names of simple things : “ fire ” , “ milk ” , “ bread ” and “ wood ” . I learned the names of the family too . I loved them . I admired their fine faces and their kindness to each other . Then one day I saw my own face in a pool of water . At first I jumped back in fear . I could not believe that the monster in the water was me . When I understood , I felt the deepest sadness . In the spring a beautiful young lady came to the cottage on a horse . She wore a dark dress and a thick black veil . When she lifted the veil , Felix’s face filled with joy . She was an Arabian lady , and her name was Safie . She did not speak the family’s language , so Felix began to teach her . I was listening behind the wall , so I learned with her . Soon I was learning faster than Safie . Felix read to her from an old book about the history of the world . I learned about kings and wars , and about rich and poor . I heard that people valued a good family and money above everything . But I had no family and no money . And I was ugly and huge . What was I ? Nobody could answer me . I also learned the story of my cottagers . They were French . Once they were rich and lived in Paris . Felix helped Safie’s father , a Turkish merchant , to escape from an unfair prison . For this the government took everything from the De Lacey family and sent them out of France . But the merchant was ungrateful and took Safie away . Now she had run away from him to find Felix , the man she loved .
