One night in the forest I found a leather bag with three books in it . One was about the lives of great men of Greece and Rome . One was a sad story about a young man in love . The third was Paradise Lost , a long poem about God , Adam and the fallen angel . I read them all with passion . In Paradise Lost , God made Adam and loved him . But Adam was happy , and he was not alone . I felt more like the fallen angel . I was alone , and I envied the happiness of others . Soon after that , I found some papers in the pocket of the coat that I had taken from your room . It was your journal from the months when you were making me . Now I could read , and I read every word . You wrote about my body with disgust . “ Hateful day when I received life ! ” I cried . “ Cursed creator ! Why did you make a monster so ugly that even you turned away from me ? ” But I still had one hope . My cottagers were good and kind . Perhaps they would look past my ugly face . The old man was blind . If I could speak to him alone first , perhaps he would help me with the others . IX . The Creature’s Story : The Blind Man One day in autumn , Felix , Agatha and Safie went out for a long walk . The old man stayed at home alone . My heart was beating fast as I knocked at the cottage door . “ Who is there ? ” said the old man . “ Come in . ” I went in . “ Excuse me , ” I said . “ I am a traveller , and I need a little rest . May I sit by your fire for a few minutes ? ” “ Sit down , ” he said kindly . “ My children are not at home , but you are welcome . ” We talked for a while . Then I told him that I was alone in the world , with no family and no friends . “ I hope to find help from some friends , ” I said . “ I love them very much , but they have never seen me . I am afraid . If they turn me away , I will be alone for ever . ” “ Do not lose hope , ” he said . “ People’s hearts are often full of love . If your friends are good , they will not turn you away . I cannot see your face , but your words sound honest . Perhaps I can help you . Where do your friends live ? ” At that moment I heard steps outside . I took the old man’s hand . “ Now is the time ! ” I cried . “ Save me and protect me ! You and your family are the friends I am looking for . Do not leave me now ! ” “ Great God ! ” cried the old man . “ Who are you ? ” The door opened , and Felix , Safie and Agatha came in . When they saw me , Agatha fainted , and Safie ran out of the cottage . Felix pulled me away from his father , threw me to the ground and hit me hard with a stick . I was strong enough to tear him to pieces . But my heart was heavy and sick , and I did not fight back . I ran out of the cottage and back to my hovel .
