Before the last trip , the captain called down to the men . “ Abraham Gray , I’m leaving this ship , and I order you to follow your captain . I know that you’re a good man . ” There was a short fight below , and then Gray ran up with a cut on his face . “ I’m with you , sir , ” he said . On the last trip the boat was too full , with five men in it : the captain , the squire , the doctor , Redruth and Gray . Then they saw that the pirates on the ship were turning the ship’s big gun towards them . “ Squire , you’re the best shot , ” said the captain . “ Shoot one of those men . ” The squire fired . Hands moved at the last moment , and another man fell . Then the big gun fired . The ball flew over their heads , but the boat went down under them . Luckily the water was not deep there . The men walked to the shore , but most of the food and three of the five guns were lost . They ran through the woods to the stockade . Just as they arrived , the pirates from the shore came running . There was a short , fierce fight . One pirate fell , and the others ran away . But poor Tom Redruth was hit , and he lay on the ground . They carried him into the log house . The squire knelt beside him and cried like a child . “ Tom , my friend , ” he said , “ please forgive me for bringing you here . ” “ There’s nothing to forgive , squire , ” said old Tom quietly . A little later he died . The captain climbed on the roof and put up the British flag . After that the pirates on the ship fired their big gun at the stockade all afternoon , but they did not hurt anybody . “ We have food for about ten days , ” said the captain . “ We’ll hold out . ” Meanwhile , I said goodbye to Ben Gunn . “ When you want me , ” he said , “ you know where to find me . Let the squire or the doctor come alone , with something white in his hand . ” Then a cannon ball landed in the sand near us , and he ran off one way and I ran the other . I hid until evening . When it was dark , I crept to the stockade and climbed over the fence . My friends were very glad to see me . X . The Attack That night I told them about Ben Gunn . “ Cheese ? ” said the doctor . “ I carry a piece of good Italian cheese in my little box . It’s for Ben Gunn ! ” The next morning somebody called out , “ A white flag ! ” A white flag means that a person wants to talk and not to fight . Two men were standing at the edge of the trees . One of them was Long John Silver . “ Who goes there ? ” called the captain . “ Captain Silver , sir , to make terms , ” said Silver . “ Captain Silver ? ” said Captain Smollett . “ I don’t know him . Who’s he ? ” “ The men chose me as their captain after you left , ” said Silver .
