The captain let him come , but not into the house . Silver climbed the sandy hill slowly and sat down in front of the door . “ Here’s my offer , ” he said . “ Give us the map , and we’ll stop shooting . When the treasure is on the ship , you can come on board too , and I’ll put you safe on shore somewhere . Or you can stay here , and I’ll tell the first ship that I see to come and get you . ” “ Is that all ? ” said the captain . “ Now listen to me . You can’t find the treasure . You can’t sail the ship . And you can’t fight us . If you come to me one by one without guns , I’ll take you home to England for a fair trial . If you don’t , I’ll send you all to the bottom of the sea . Now go away , my man , and quickly . ” Silver’s face went black with anger . “ Give me a hand up ! ” he cried . Nobody moved . He had to crawl to the doorway on his hands and knees before he could stand . “ Before an hour is over , ” he shouted , “ I’ll break your old log house like a rum barrel ! Those who die will be the lucky ones ! ” And he went away through the trees . We loaded all the guns and waited at the small windows in the walls . Then shots came from the woods on every side , and a group of pirates ran at the fence and climbed over it . After that everything happened very fast . Smoke filled the house . A pirate reached the doorway . Somebody shouted , “ Out , lads , out ! Fight them in the open ! ” I took a cutlass and ran outside with the doctor and Gray . I fell down the hill , and when I got up again , the fight was over . The pirates were running back into the woods . Five of them lay on the ground and did not move . But we paid a high price . Joyce was dead , shot at his window . Hunter was badly hurt , and he died in the night . And the captain was wounded in the shoulder and the leg . “ Have they run away ? ” asked the captain weakly . “ All of them that could , ” said the doctor . “ But five of them will never run again . ” “ Five ! ” said the captain . “ That’s better . At the start we were seven against nineteen . ” XI . Jim Takes the Ship After lunch the doctor took his pistols and the map , and he walked off into the woods . “ Is the doctor mad ? ” asked Gray . “ No , ” I said . “ I think he’s going to see Ben Gunn . ” It was very hot inside the stockade , and I wanted to be free like the doctor . So I did a very foolish thing . I filled my pockets with biscuits , took two pistols and slipped out over the fence while nobody was watching . Near the white rock , under a tent of goat skins , I found Ben Gunn’s boat . It was very small , with a wooden frame and goat skins over it , more like a basket than a boat . Boats like this are called coracles , and the ancient Britons used them .
