I was amazed . I did not know anything about it . The pirates came back , and Dick gave Silver a small piece of paper . It was the black spot , cut from a page of a Bible . “ You’ve made a mess of this voyage , John , ” said George Merry , one of the pirates . “ You let our enemies go free . And you’re protecting this boy . ” “ Who lost the ship ? ” answered Silver calmly . “ You did , when you started fighting too early . And do you want to know why I made a bargain with the doctor ? Look at this ! ” He threw a paper on the floor . It was Flint’s map , with the three red crosses . The pirates jumped on it like cats on a mouse , and they laughed and shouted with joy . So they chose Silver as their captain again . He gave the black spot to me , and I still have it today . Early the next morning a voice called from the woods . “ Log house , ahoy ! It’s the doctor ! ” Dr Livesey came in and gave medicine to the sick and wounded pirates . Many of them had a fever from the marshes . When he saw me , he said nothing for a moment . Then he asked to talk to me alone . Silver agreed . “ Hawkins , ” he said , “ will you give me your word of honour that you won’t run away ? ” I gave my word . We talked through the fence , and the pirates watched us . “ Jim , ” said the doctor sadly , “ you ran away when the captain was wounded . That wasn’t brave . ” I began to cry . Then he spoke more quietly . “ Jump over the fence , Jim , and we’ll run . ” “ No , ” I said . “ I gave my word . ” Then I told him about the ship in the North Inlet . His face lit up . “ Every step of the way , it’s you who saves our lives , Jim , ” he said . “ You found out about the pirates . You found Ben Gunn . And now you’ve found the ship . ” Before he left , he spoke to Silver . “ Don’t be in a hurry to find that treasure , ” he said . “ And keep the boy close beside you . When you need help , shout . ” XIV . The Treasure After breakfast the pirates set out to find the treasure . They all had guns . Silver had his parrot on his shoulder , and he tied a rope round my waist and held the other end of it . I felt like a dancing bear . We went by boat and then climbed up the side of the Spy - glass . Suddenly one of the men in front cried out in fear . Under a tall pine tree lay a man’s skeleton . It lay very straight , with its feet pointing one way and its arms above its head . “ That’s one of Flint’s jokes , ” said Silver . “ He killed those six men , and he put this one here as a compass . His arms point the way to the treasure . ” After that the pirates walked close together , and they talked in whispers . When we sat down to rest , a thin , high voice began to sing among the trees : “ Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest , yo - ho - ho , and a bottle of rum ! ”
